World Week for the Abolition of Meat: 23-30 Sept 2011

category international | animal rights | event notice author Sunday September 18, 2011 15:13author by meat-abolition.orgauthor email contact at meat-abolition dot org

The next WWAM will take place, as planned, between 23 September and 30 September 2011.

The aim is to promote again and again the idea that the production and consumption of animal flesh must be abolished.

The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves
for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting.

As you know, the past World Week for the Abolition of Meat [ http://www.meat-abolition.org/en/wwam ] was a success [ http://www.meat-abolition.org/en/actu/closing-communiqu...-wwam ] throughout the world.

The next WWAM [ http://www.meat-abolition.org/en/call ] will take place, as planned, between 23 September and 30 September 2011.
The aim is to promote again and again the idea that the production and consumption of animal flesh must be abolished [ http://www.meat-abolition.org/en/presentation ].

Advocating the abolition of meat is the logical extension of vegetarianism or veganism. People who are against bull-fighting do not only ask the public to boycott bull-fighting events, they ask for bull-fighting to be banned. The opponents of “foie gras” do not only advise people against buying it, they want force feeding to be banned. Why would the opponents of meat be the only ones to restrict themselves to giving individual advice?

The refusal to eat meat can be seen as a political boycott and as the expression of one’s support for the demand for abolition similar to the campaign for the abolition of slavery in Britain at the end the 18th century where 300,000 people boycotted the sugar produced from slave plantations.

The movement for the abolition of meat is a political act: its aim is to get the public to adhere to the idea that meat should be banned. Its objective is that human societies, one after another, decide to ban the production, sale, and consumption of meat.

The idea is to claim loud and clear that it is not only the duty of each individual to stop supporting the murderous exploitation required by the consumption of animal flesh and "by-products", but that it is also, therefore, the duty of societies as a whole to declare themselves
for the banning of farming, fishing and hunting.

why not approach this subject by way of efficiency, biological danger and global warming?

the fact is it takes 5 times the area of land to produce one kg of meat protien versus 1kg of vegetable protien. In a world where the oil is running out yet the population has exploded to around 7 billion, Efficient land use and food production will become an increasingly important issue. Studies have indicated that without any fossil fuels, the arable land of the world and manual farming methods can only support around 2 billion people and even then can likely only do so if we maintain a strict vegan diet and compost absolutely everything possible including even the bodies of the dead!!

Cows expel vast quantities of methane gas which is 23 times as potent as CO2 as a greenhouse gas.
Vast swathes of rainforest are cleared to make way for cattle to graze thus releasing carbon previously locked up into the atmosphere.

Large concentrated factory pig farms run by huge corporate entities such as the one owned by smithfield foods in mexico are essentially virus amplification and diversification laboratories. The pigs are fed a constant diet of antibiotics to keep them alive in the terrible conditions resulting in the release of bacterial organisms that are resistant to most of our available antibiotics.
Previously this recipe for disaster resulted in the outbreak of swine flu. Next time it might not be such a mild pandemic if mixed in with bird flu elements..

Selfish pragmatism dictates that you should just give up meat. Even if you don't give a shit about cruelty or care about any species but human beings. ( Of course any sentient non sociopath would also have to add the horrific systematic cruelty element as a major factor in the equation!!)
