category dublin | worker & community struggles and protests | event notice author Wednesday October 02, 2013 23:25author by anon - Claiming Our Future

Monday, 7th of October, 6 - 8 pm (from 5.30 pm: Registration, Tea & Coffee)

Another Austerity Budget is looming: The government is currently discussing how to implement €3.1bn of austerity in October’s Budget (and another €2bn in 2015). The impact of previous budget cuts are devastating those on lower incomes and in poverty, the public health system, special needs supports, the unemployed, those in mortgage arrears etc. Austerity is destroying our society and economy.

Speakers: Michael Taft (UNITE Trade Union), Mary Murphy (COF) and Siobhán O'Donoghue (Migrants Rights Centre Ireland)

There are real credible alternatives! It is clear that austerity has failed socially and economically. We need another approach. Alternatives include using the promissory note proceeds to mitigate cuts, raising taxes on wealth and closing tax loopholes such as corporate taxes and pension reliefs, creating sustainable employment through government stimulus.

Claiming our Future has been highlighting that there are alternatives to austerity for the past number of Budgets. At our Budget Alternatives Campaign conference in July in Dublin participants stated that their priority for the coming budget was Tax justice (requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share), stop austerity of cuts to welfare & public services and for sustainable development including the sustainable use of natural resources. To support these priorities three actions were identified: A media campaign including publicity actions; publicising the facts and figures relating to tax and investment returns and thirdly, local meetings to promote real alternatives for a better Ireland.

At this event we want to share and discuss thealternatives to another austerity budget and look at civil society campaigns and actions being undertaken to challenge spending cuts. If you are just interested or you are already involved in actions to promote alternatives this event is for you. You will get information and resources and a chance to talk through new ideas and new ways to challenge current policies.
