It’s a rich irony – in fact a richness worth about $7.4 billion, and counting. In the same week that European Union envoys voted to extend trade sanctions on Russia, news emerges from the Paris Air Show that American aviation giant, Boeing, is moving ahead to sell a fleet of its 747 cargo planes – to Russia.

Our own Finian Cunningham hits the nail on the head with his piece titled:
"US to EU: Sanctions Are For Suckers!"

That deal – reportedly worth about $7.4 billion – will see Boeing supply Russian transport firm Volga-Dnepr with 20 long-haul aircraft. That inventory is in addition to the fleet of 14 Boeing 747s that the Russian company has already purchased, according to media reports.
Moreover, it also emerged this past week that the Pentagon is lobbying hard for the US Congress to ease trade restrictions imposed on Russian-manufactured space rockets. According to a report in the Washington Times, US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter and other Pentagon officials are calling on Senators to repeal a ban on Russian space technology. The Pentagon says that a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin needs to purchase 14 RD-180 Russian engines in order to power Lockheed’s Atlas V space rocket program.

So there you have it.
The European Union, caught in a debilitating trade war with Russia, is digging an even deeper hole for its beleaguered economy with renewed sanctions on Moscow – while the Americans are finding all sorts of loopholes to skirt those same sanctions on Russia when it suits them.

Isn't it time that our servile EU leaders broke free of the yoke of Washington and pursued it's own foreign and economic policies?

Because between bankrolling Nazis in Ukraine, the spying on all EU leaders, and driving a wedge between Germany and Russia by pushing for crazy sanctions which have no economic effect on themselves but a crippling effect on an already weakened Europe, which they themselves ignore at will, clearly the US are playing silly buggers with us all and having a belly laugh at our expense while we shoot ourselves in both feet

It's quite puzzling why the Russians would even agree to buy Boeing aircraft rather than support their own industry. Why would they do this when the same country is trying to cripple them? It is also extremely likely that the US would install some sort of ability in the software controlling the avonics to disrupt or cause the planes to crash should they need to call upon this requirement at some point in the future. This could be triggered by a variety of means, whether through reception of certain coded signals from satellites or drones or AWACs type aircraft. It would be next to impossible to verify the software is clean.

On a related note there was a program a few years back where Gadaffi was buying a Boeing aircraft and there were discussions between Boeing and the US security state and one of the heads of Boeing suggested installing hidden explosives in the airframe where the wings attached with the intent that these could be triggered at any point in the future should they wish to kill him. So in light of this, it defies belief why the Russians would buy anything from the very people trying to break up their country via color revolutions. Perhaps they think they can figure it all out and take counter-measures or perhaps there are different power factions within the Russian power structure which are pro Neo-liberal capitalism and managed to get this deal through.

well it's an interesting point you make. I have no doubt that "fly by wire" capability is built into these planes.
However the sale is to private business. And we all know the saying that if you want to hang capitalists, they will happily sell you the rope. maybe it's just another example of greed trumping all else with these corporations. Because the fact is that pretty much all they care about is profits. And that's also why boeing would include the fly by wire software. so they could sell it to their government, after they have gotten the profit from selling the planes. for more profits.

But why the russian government would allow the purchase, in a time of US pushing sanctions, is definitely an interesting question.
