Take a part in lunchtime readings of an epic play

Sssh! Keep it under your hat, but preparations for a rebellion and revolution are being made in Temple Bar. The dangerous subversive Margaretta D’Arcy (aka Ireland’s Guantanamo Granny) is holding a series of lunchtime readings of the groundbreaking 1970s play she co-authored with John Arden (aka The Angry Young Man) at Connolly Books in Essex Street. Each day, between 1pm and 2pm, volunteers are taking parts and reading scenes from the Non Stop Connolly Show about the life and struggles of James Connolly. The last scene covering the 1916 Easter Rising will be performed on Thursday 12 May, the centenary of Connolly’s execution.

Highlights of the coming week (2-7 May) and parts to be taken include:

Rosa Luxemburg
Connolly in America: Eugene Debs; Wild Bill Hayward of the IWW; Mother Jones
Jim Larkin and the Dublin Lockout
Music from the amazing Dublin Ukele Collective, stars of the Electric Picnic
Tea and cakes courtesy of the Communist Party Ireland. Double helpings for anarchists!

The final week (9-12 May) covers:
The struggle for Home Rule
Carson playing the Orange card
The formation of the Irish Citizen Army
The outbreak of war
Connolly and Pearse
Countess Markievicz gets her gun
The Easter Rising

If you would like to read, please turn up at 12.30pm to be cast.

Don’t be a Sean O’Casey and miss out on this experience. Come to read or come to watch and feel your blood quicken.
