A gift had been despatched to Dr Dennis Pringle in Maynooth the monthly meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group (CEHG) heard on Sunday morning last 23 May 2004. It was intended as a token of appreciation to the lecturer for the report “Cancer mortality and morbidity in Co Louth” which he presented to CEHG in December and also for his recent visit and talk in Omeath at the round table conference on cancer statistics which CEHG organised a month or so ago.
The names of five possible speakers were pencilled in for the Group’s fifth annual winter workshop, which is scheduled for Saturday afternoon 29 January 2005. The title for the workshop is “Organisation and Health.” The Treasurer of the Group, Mr Sean Crudden, said it was essential that grant aid be found in order to operate the workshop to CEHG’s usual standard.
It was agreed that handball should be promoted. The question was asked, “What is stopping it?” “It would be an extra interest for young people,” a member commented. It was pointed out that older people could play handball too. The same member commented on the proliferation of rubbishy buildings saying, “They are no use to anyone.” It was agreed to canvass again the football clubs, schools, etc., in the hope of initiating some progress towards the promotion of handball in the Peninsula.
The treasurer agreed to release funds for a trip by three members of the Group to see fully developed handball facilities in Carrickmacross and Kingscourt.
CEHG celebrates on 13 June 2004 the tenth anniversary of its foundation.
The next meeting of CEHG was fixed for Sunday 19 September 2004 starting at 11.30 a.m. sharp in The Strand, Omeath. All are welcome to attend.
