ESF live feed to dublin a week after ISF

category international | public consultation / irish social forum | opinion/analysis author Wednesday September 08, 2004 00:15author by dunk - indymediaauthor email fuspey at yahoo dot co dot uk Report this post to the editors

2500 years ago people communicated in the agora in athens
we are in a new age :: new agora:: is a dual system of using real and virtual together to again develop healthy discussion
an attempt to make a live feed from the ESF in london to convergence festival in dublin a week after ISF 2 is underway
ESF live connection to ireland
ESF live connection to ireland

irish social forum is on Fri 8th Oct to Sun 10th.
european social forum is on Fri 15th Oct to Sun 17th.
sustainable irelands cultivate festival is on Thr 14th Oct to Sun 17th.

as part of the convergence festival there will be time and space given over to new media, films etc and as part of this event organiser Davy Philips has agreed to give us, indymedia/ social forum, a space in the festival- a few hours to try to make a “live connection” with the european social forum (ESF) that is happening in london. This could be in the format of live radio streams from london or better still live viewing of the discussions or pleanerys. Better still would be a web conferencing type system, whereby people in Ireland interested in the ESF but unable to get there could go to the cultivate centre (name of centre in temple bar rented by “sustainable Ireland” and venue of “convergence festival”) to participate in the process in a 2 way format using webcams/ vid recorders and beamers.
some discussion has happened about this and as far as i know the uk-imc crew are looking into this as a real project to undertake

I believe it an ineviatable process that both “indymedia” and “social forum” will grow and be used by more and more people. In theory it is possible for everyone on the planet to engage in the social forum process so i think it’s very important for us to demonstrate to our selves new ways of communicating and interacting with each other without physically “being there”

i have written previously before, if somewhat in a more disorganised fashion, about this type of project as an example of ::new agora::

hey, nice ideas.

sadly the esf process in london has mostly ignored communications issues despite tons of lobbying by media activists inc come individuals from indymedia.

until recently there wasn't even a budget for the IT or media centre for the esf!

despite getting agreements to use open source and free software, to allow community media access to the media centre and so on, whether these will happen looks a bit shakey at the moment.

NOMAD, a project to provide simultaneous translation infrastructure built out of recycled computers and open source software, streaming and archiving MP3 audio from not only the speaker but also the live interpretation languages - has been rejected by the esf as not a priority.

in short those mostly in charge of the esf (that's SWP - socialist workers party / SA - socialist action) do not see communications or technology as a political issue, indeed many see media issues as fully non-political...

indeed more that that they rejected many attempts to develop web tools to aid the esf and even blocked working groups setting up email lists - amazing!

anyway - indymedia and other alt media and community media groups are planning stuff. there will be an ongoing imc media centre in central london, another alt media / imc access centre at another autonomous space in north london, and if things go to plan there should be some web streaming from in side Allexandra Palace (esf hq) as well as outside.

more to come on this later in the week....

The 'Weekly Worker' has covered the planning meeting for the ESF in great detail and it is pretty disturbing reading. There has been lots of fighting about who the 15 official speakers from Britain should be. Which leads to a question, there is one official speaker from Ireland, does anyone know who this is to be? And more to the point who selected them?

The agora was where a lot of the buying and selling was done in ancient Athens. Lots of causal chatting. But the community decision making, .i.e. the politics, took place in the mass assemly and to a much lesser extent the council which acted as a sort of secretariat to the assembly. Every adult male citizen was entitled to attend; unfortunately that left out a lot of people! Still you would have thousands of people having an input, beats the Dáil!

some helpfull input would be desirable please
are you in favour of this idea, would it make any difference
would you attend
what form would a system like this take

some imc ireland people are going over
davie is happy to do this on the sunday,
so perhaps one of the summing up pleanerys could be visually broadcast into the convergence centre in dublin

and with the right equipment those there could watch and even input back to the forum in london

i feel its very important for us to push these new ways of communicating

this has been done at the convergence centre before when indymedia people gave a workshop there, i was not there if anyone was can you give links to that forum or a report

in 10 years time there is no reason why the majority of the world is not represented at the world social forum, and with that even participating in the process

it makes sense, does it not?

Given the ESF co-option by hierarchical non-transparent government institututions and political parties ( e.g the GLA ) there are alternatives happening in London in repsonse to those opportunistic hijackers.

The Autonomous Spaces during the ESF includes the following - European Creative Forum, Indymedia Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination, LETS ,London Social Forum, Media Culture and Communication Rights, Schnews, and The Wombles.

fyi the sunday morning in london will see some plenary / seminar activity, but not any summing up type thing.

the assembly of the social movements will take place in the morning - this is the seperate body that makes calls for action and is not officially part of the ESF (cos the esf does not make calls) - though quite how the process for deciding which calls to support works is unclear (i think it's a case of a 'small working group' to make proposals).

the afternoon will be the main demo and nothing else - starting at about 1pm from bloomsbury, going south over the river, along southbank, back over by parliamnet sq, past No10 and up to traf sq for a gig / concert.

so what i'm saying is that sunday is not the best day to do this really (if it happens that day it would have to be the morning), saturday or friday would be better....

i know people from some of the autonomous spaces would be up for working on the link up proposal. radio webstream content would be certainly be available.

we'll discuss these ideas in london over the next week and come back to you.
