"Communities Connect" disconnect Cooley

category louth | environment | news report author Sunday October 09, 2005 16:08author by Sean Crudden - Cooley Environmental and Health Groupauthor email sean at cooleyehg dot comauthor address Jenkinstown, Dundalk, Co Louth.author phone 087 9739945 Report this post to the editors

October Meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group

It is impossible to hold the attention of indymedia readers long enough to read a full report of all the discussions at this morning's meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group. The most heat was generated by a discussion on training.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group took place in The Strand, Omeath, starting with breakfast at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 9 October 2005.

Matters discussed included handball, "The Cutting" at Greenore, winter workshop on "Isolation," funding, sponsors for www.cooleyehg.com website, finance, pollution/conservation audit of Cooley Peninsula and adjacent waters, North Louth Area Forum.

Discussing training the secretary of the group, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes, reported that the residential training course organised in Lusty Beg by Groundwork NI during the previous week had been very enjoyable. It was excellent for meeting people of different persuasions. Members of Cooley Environmental and Health Group were treated very well during their stay in Lusty Beg. "It was an icebreaker," the Archbishop continued. Subjects studied by members of Cooley Environmental and Health Group at the course included conflict resolution, citizenship and identity, facilitation skills, media relations, archery.

The meeting also heard that it was expected that two members of Cooley Environmental and Health Group would take part in a residential course in Bangor in November courtesy of "Conservation Volunteers Ireland."

The meeting heard that although one session had been successfully completed there the 10 session course on community development in Carlingford organised by "Communities Connect" (a joint project of Louth LEADER and Newry and Mourne LEADER) had been discontinued. The course was being run and accredited by The University of Ulster.

The secretary said that Cooley was being segregated and socially excluded. He pointed out that LEADER was supposed to be a rural development program yet the only rural centre for the Communities Connect course, Carlingford, had been aborted while the program continued in Dundalk and Drogheda - both of which are major urban centres in the county. The general feeling in the meeting was that LEADER had reneged on Cooley people and had spurned them and shown disrespect towards them.

"People need connections when they are weak - not when they are strong," the secretary concluded.

The treasurer, Sean Crudden, said "There are women and men in Cooley from the highlands of Spellickanee and Corrakit to the lowlands of Bellurgan and Ballug who have the appetite and capacity for training in community development. Clearly the people of Cooley will continue to walk, unaided by LEADER, within the paths of community development."

As an alternative to the "Communities Connect" course the meeting decided to buy a book on community development and to see what The Open University and Dundalk Institute of Technology might have to offer.

The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group was fixed for 13 November 2005 commencing at 11.00 a.m. with breakfast in The Strand Hotel, Omeath. All are welcome.

Dear Sir

It appears to me that the whole course may be well out of line in relation to who is on the course as Leader is to promote rural applicants on this course. There is need to check out where the course participants are from in both Drogheda and the Dundalk venue and possible in the Newry & Mourne Area.

The Interreg 111 A Funders should investigate where the course members are from! They should all be from rural areas. If rural candidates for the course failed to get on the course they the Louth Leader should be taken to court for embezzlemant of funding. If they have have rural people that is course members must all live in rural area served by Louth County County and not town councils then there may be no case. At least five people from the Cooley Peninsula are victims of social exclusion and also a breach of contract as all members were verbally told they were on a course for 10 weeks and to purchase folders etc for the course. It appears to me and if this is the case along with members of the course been from say either Dundalk, Drogheda or Ardee town council areas then the socially excluded from Cooley Peninsula should be addressed financially for the injustice that Louth leader has caused. Cooley people could and should have been considered for placement in the Newry & Mourne venues as well. I will write to Chairamn of the Louth County Council on this injustice in due course.

Towns like Dundalk are catered for by Partnerships while Leader is to look after and connect the rural. In this case "Communities Disconnect". I wonder what the Newry and Mourne sector of the communities think about the cock up?

I am sorry to have to come on line here as a close relation of mine has been excluded from the course. Please God Justice will be done in due course.

Why do you keep posting about your group as if people cared?

Just for the recored, can you please answer the following questions :

1) How many people were at this meeting?
2) Apart from writing letters and talking about things what has your silly little group ever actually done?

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group took place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Sunday 11 December 2005, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m.

When the meeting heard that there had been no further sales in the past month of The Pringle Report (Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in County Louth) it was decided to distribute it more widely into Mountbagenal, Jenkinstown and Omeath before Christmas.

Sean Crudden reported that there were clear indications that John Maguire, Health Promotion (Mental Health), HSE North East Region; Dr Mary Grehan MCC; John Radican, Director, Irish Advocacy Network; Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA PhD; Kalichi; Sean Crudden BSc H Dip in Ed; William Jones (Engineer) will speak at the group’s winter workshop. The theme of the workshop is "isolation" and the workshop is scheduled to take place in The Strand Hotel on the afternoon of Saturday 28 January 2006. Any member of the public wishing to speak at the workshop is more than welcome to do so and should contact Sean Crudden (087 9739945) as soon as possible.

In a subsequent discussion it was felt that isolation could be caused by biological determining factors or by social background. "You can isolate yourself," one member opined. Another member suggested that isolation can be malevolently "engineered." A lot of people like to be "one of the crowd" right or wrong. It was stated by the secretary, Archbishop Michael Desmond ("Dessie") Hynes that the way to break down barriers is by social participation, collective decision making, democracy and by finding progressive ways of dealing with conflict. The meeting recognised that one of the most difficult things to do is to change the established way of doing things.

The secretary said he hoped the adjudicator of the open essay competition on "isolation" (entries must be submitted before 18 January 2006) would be particularly impressed by writing based on personal experience.

It was decided that the "latest news" page of the group’s website www.cooleyehg.com would be spruced up and made livelier with local news. The secretary said he would ensure that this was done.

Discussions on energy, handball and the pollution/conservation audit of the peninsula were postponed until February.

The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group was fixed for The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 22 January 2006.

A Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to one and all.

It was decided at Sunday morning’s meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group to distribute for sale in Ardee the Pringle Report into Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in Co Louth.

The meeting, which commenced at 11.00 a.m. with a tasty breakfast, took place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath.

A discussion on energy highlighted the benefits of hydropower in the Cooley area as an alternative to wind or nuclear energy.

It was decided to hold a consultation at the next meeting of the group to try and get knowledgeable people in the local area to establish a bench mark about the state of biodiversity in the Cooley Peninsula at the present time. It was pointed out that monoculture in forestry and farming was exerting considerable pressure on the natural environment to the detriment of native flora and fauna.

A few key players will also be specially invited to attend the next meeting of the group to explore the possibility of developing the game of handball in the peninsula.

The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group will take place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Palm Sunday 9 April 2006, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m.

Satisfaction was expressed with this year’s winter workshop which took place on 28 January. The theme was “isolation.” Next year’s workshop which will take place on the last weekend of January 2007 will be on the theme “Urban Sprawl!”

The meeting concluded with a wide-ranging discussion on bullying.

A program of work was laid out on Sunday morning at a special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group to try to introduce handball in the Cooley peninsula. Firstly it was resolved to find out if there are any administrative structures for handball in Co Louth. Secondly it was decided to see if it might be practical to organise facilities for "one-wall" handball in Lordship, Omeath and Cooley within existing buildings. Thirdly it was decided to canvass the possibility of getting a handball court built at a central location such as Bush. It was decided that progress on all these fronts would be reviewed at the next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group which is due to take place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Sunday 21 May 2006 starting at 10.30 a.m.

Cooley Environmental and Health Group is very grateful for the assistance of Padraig Oliver, Chairperson of Louth GAA County Board, and Peter Larkin, Cooley Kickhams GFC, who attended the meeting on Sunday morning.

A wide-ranging discussion took place about the structure of the seventh annual winter workshop being organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group which is due to take place on the afternoon of Saturday 27 January 2007. The names of thirteen possible speakers were pencilled in. In general it is hoped to harness local expertise rather than to import big name speakers for the occasion. The theme of the workshop is "Urban Sprawl!" It is also hoped to organise an essay/design competition to coincide with the workshop.

Other matters discussed included bird flu and the proposed wind-farm development off Clogherhead.

A formal meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group took place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing with breakfast at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 21 May 2006.

The meeting heard that there are no formal administrative structures in place in Co Louth dealing specifically with handball. It was agreed that Cooley Environmental and Health Group would form a handball society and it was decided to hold a handball outing on 10 July 2006 at 11.30 a.m. in The Marists’ handball alleys in Dundalk. The people involved at the start will be mainly retired and older people who have some handball experience. The Group are very grateful for his advice and guidance to Padhraic Oliver, Chairperson of Louth County Board, GAA, who attended Sunday morning’s meeting.

It was agreed to contact Dr Caroline Roche, Aquafact, Galway, who is carrying out a public consultation in regard to the proposed windfarm off Clogherhead and the Louth coast, to see if she would be willing to address the winter workshop on the topic of "Urban Sprawl!" A number of other, local experts are to be contacted to try to get them to participate in the workshop which is due to take place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Saturday 27 January 2006 commencing at 2.00 p.m.

It was agreed that the secretary of the Group, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA PhD, and the treasurer, Sean Crudden, would seek the auspices of Louth County Community and Voluntary Forum to attend a course next month in Cavan on rural transport.

Speaking on the issue of drug abuse the secretary pointed out that he is a member of the Regional Drugs Taskforce which meets in Carrickmacross once a month. He outlined the purpose and methodology of "drug courts" a few of which operate on a pilot basis in the city of Dublin. He said the waiting time for commencing methodone treatment for compliant drug abusers is 8 months in Co Louth.

The secretary reported that he and the treasurer had attended Saturday’s meeting "Sellafield - Still a Danger" which was held in The Fairways Hotel, Dundalk. "If you could do without nuclear power it would be better - it would be cleaner," he concluded.

The next meeting was fixed for Sunday 16 July 2006 starting at 11.00 a.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath. All are welcome. Those requiring breakfast then should contact Sean Crudden (0879739945) before Friday 14 July 2006.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Sunday morning (24 September 2006) heard that the Pringle Report will soon be distributed in Omeath, Carlingford and Ardee.

An outing to Carrickmacross to play handball was fixed for 16 October 2006.

A total of 20 names were discussed as speakers for the seventh annual winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group (to be held on Saturday 27 January 2007). Approximately seven of these speakers have already confirmed that they will address the workshop (the theme is "Urban Sprawl!")

Sponsorship of the group’s website www.cooleyehg.com was discussed and the meeting was hopeful that the existing sponsors will continue their sponsorship of the site for a further year. It was also decided to seek a sponsor for the essay/plan competition on "Urban Sprawl!" The meeting decided to extend the deadline for entries into this competition to early April 2007.

Chairperson, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA, told the meeting that he and another member of Cooley Environmental and Health Group had attended in The Four Seasons Hotel, Monaghan, a consultation seminar on active citizenship on Tuesday 19 September 2006. He suggested that the reason why there was an apparent drop-off in volunteering was because of a lack of commitment. "People are self-centred," he said, "There is a lot of self-interest and people ask ‘What is in it for me?’" He said the performance of many PRO’s was poor so people are not properly informed about the activities of various voluntary organisations. Sean Crudden said it was not just a matter of time. "People have time if they could get their time organised," he said.

Sean Crudden, who will probably be acting as facilitator of the winter workshop "Urban Sprawl!" undertook as background to attend on 22 and 23 November 2006 Focus Ireland’s "Festival of Home" in The Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. The festival will include an exhibition of mixed media that will provide participants with an opportunity to explore their understanding of home through film, art, literature and workshops. It will also include an international conference that will examine the connection between housing and home. Delegates will be given the opportunity to debate "the meaning of home" and to examine issues including housing provision and responses to homelessness.

The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group was fixed for 22 October 2006 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m.

Sunday morning’s meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, heard that The Pringle Report "Cancer Mortality and Morbidity in County Louth" has been distributed to Omeath P.O.; Crilly’s Shop, Ravensdale; Jenkinstown P.O.; Lanney’s Supermarket, Ardee.

There had been a successful outing to Carrickmacross Emmett’s sports facility on 16 October 2006. Des Cunningham had obliged and togged out for a game of handball with Sean Crudden. The next outing to Carrickmacross was fixed for 4 December 2006 departing from Ballymascanlon at 7.00 p.m. sharp. Anyone interested should get in touch with Sean Crudden 0879739945.

The following have confirmed as speakers for the seventh annual winter workshop organised by Cooley Environmental and Health Group; Fergus Flynn-Rogers, Arthur Morgan TD, Paul Jennings, Leonard Hatrick TC, Anne Muldowney, Eric Hynes, Pat Ferrigan, Padraic Oliver, Larry Staudt, Paul Matthews. A number of other speakers are expected to confirm in the near future. The topic for discussion is "Urban Sprawl!" and the workshop is due to take place on Saturday 27 January 2007 commencing at 2.00 p.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath.

The following firms have renewed their sponsorship of www.cooleyehg.com till October 2007: Ballymascanlon House Hotel, Golf and Leisure Club; Cooley Sand & Gravel Co; Cooley Distillery plc.

The final date for entries into the essay/plan competition on "Urban Sprawl!" was fixed for 15 April 2007.

Following a discussion on the Oriel windfarm project Sean Crudden said he agreed with those who thought the project "visionary."

Consideration was given to proposals for restructuring Louth County Community & Voluntary Forum. The meeting felt that the forum should continue to be based on electoral areas to ensure an even geographical spread of representation. It was recognised that the forum was not "authoritative" but fear was expressed that if representation on the forum were based on "sectoral interest" then the forum could become exclusive in its composition.

The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group was fixed for Sunday 26 November 2006 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group decided to revamp the structure of its winter workshop. Instead of a unitary session on "Urban Sprawl!" the workshop will be broken up into groups to work on sub-themes such as "Transport and Energy," "Infrastructure and Housing," "Social Behaviour and Culture," "Education and Sport." It is hoped to have at least three people participating in each group including a reasonably expert person to moderate the activity of each group and to "report back." Needless to say all themes will be dealt with and examined in the context of the Cooley peninsula.

The special meeting referred to above took place after a breakfast in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth, which commenced at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday 26 November 2006. The next meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group was fixed for 21 January 2007 commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath. The winter workshop is scheduled to start at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 27 January 2007 in The Strand Hotel.

The handball excursion to Carrickmacross Emmetts’ facility departs from Ballymascanlon at 7.00 p.m. on Monday 4 December 2006. All those interested in going should contact Sean Crudden 0879739945.

In The Strand Hotel, Omeath, at Sunday morning’s meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group, it was decided that the handball outing to Carrickmacross Emmets’ facility would depart from Fitzpatrick’s, Rockmarshall, at 7.00 p.m. on Monday 5 March 2007. Contact Sean Crudden 0879739945.

The treasurer, Sean Crudden, said the group was grateful to Louth County Enterprise Board for a grant of €300 without which it would have been impossible to organise the recent successful winter workshop on "urban sprawl."

The topic for the winter workshop in 2008 will be "Social Behaviour - Anti Social Behaviour?"

The closing date for entries into the open competition for the best essay/plan on urban sprawl was fixed for 6 May 2007. Entries for the competition should be sent to sean@cooleyehg.com or to Sean Crudden, Jenkinstown, Dundalk. There will be one single valuable prize i.e. winner takes all.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group (CEHG) took place in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, on Sunday 6 May 2007 starting at 11.00 a.m. with breakfast.

A handball outing was arranged for Monday 21 May at 11.00 a.m. in the Marist handball alleys in Dundalk. Contact Sean Crudden 0879739945 if you are interested.

The theme for winter workshop 2008 will be "Anti-social Behaviour." The workshop will be facilitated by Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA PhD and is fixed for 26 January 2008 starting at 2.00 p.m.

No entries were received for the competition on "Urban Sprawl." The competition is now closed.

The meeting was given an overview of the activities of Louth County Community and Voluntary Forum by Archbishop Hynes who is the CEHG representative on the Forum.

CEHG will seek to publish a view on the use of plant at Greenore Port for the production of bio-diesel. Sean Crudden said he thought the proposed development inappropriate because it was beside Greenore Golf Club and very close to a residential area. The meeting heard that the raw material for the plant will come ashore from ships and the finished product will be carried away by ship.

The meeting decided to endorse the submission made by Greenore-Cooley Fisherman’s Association in regard to the proposal to construct a roll-on roll-off terminal at The Cutting, Greenore. Sean Crudden opined that the future of road transport was short and uncertain. "Rather than bring 500 road trucks a day into Greenore the developers should be looking at the possibility of reinstating a railway system leading to and from Greenore," he said.

The next meeting of CEHG was fixed for Sunday 24 June 2007 commencing at 11.00 a.m. with breakfast in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth.

A meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group (CEHG) was preceded by a breakfast which began at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday last (24 June 2007) in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth.

It was decided to discontinue the program of handball outings until later on in the year.

A total of 21 names were pencilled in to be approached to speak and participate in January 2008 in the winter workshop on anti-social behaviour.

The meeting heard that Sean Crudden had been elected as PRO of the Louth County Community and Voluntary Forum at its A.G.M. on 18 June 2007. The secretary of CEHG, Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes, had been nominated at the same meeting as the forum’s representative onto the ad-hoc subcommittee of the VEC for adult education.

The secretary reported that he had circulated widely a letter on the proposed plant at Greenore for the production of bio-diesel. There had been no feed-back he said.

It was decided to try to combine with Greenore-Cooley Fisherman’s Association and send, if it proved practicable, a joint submission to Gerry Foley, Coastal Zone Policy Section, Department of Transport and The Marine, Clonakilty. The subject of the submission will be the proposed development by Oriel Windfarm off the Co Louth coast.

The next meeting was fixed for Sunday 2 September 2007 at 11.00 a.m. in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, Co Louth. The meeting will commence with breakfast and CEHG’s website www.cooleyehg.com will be discussed at the meeting.

A special meeting of Cooley Environmental and Health Group (CEHG) took place on Sunday morning last (2 September 2007) in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, beginning with breakfast at 11.00 a.m.

An outline panel of speakers was designed for the eighth annual CEHG winter workshop which is to be held on 26 January 2008 starting at 2.00 p.m. in The Strand Hotel. The theme of the workshop will be "Anti-Social Behaviour," and the facilitator for the workshop will be Archbishop Michael Desmond Hynes OMA PhD. Sean Crudden who acted as facilitator for the previous seven workshops will assist with the organisation and facilitation of this the eighth workshop.

Various forms of abuse were mentioned at Sunday morning’s meeting; spiritual abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, coercion; and some of these issues will be dealt with at the proposed workshop. In general it is hoped to concentrate in the workshop on the causes of anti-social behaviour rather than on fast remedies or quick fixes.

Ways and means were discussed of raising funds to discharge web-hosting fees for a further year for www.cooleyehg.com which is the official CEHG website. CEHG hopes existing sponsors will remain on board and one or two new additional sponsors may be sought.

The next meeting was fixed for 7 October 2007 in The Strand Hotel, Omeath, commencing with breakfast at 11.00 a.m. All are welcome to attend.

A group of approximately 20 post-graduate students from NUI Maynooth conducted a survey in Jenkinstown, Gyles’ Quay, Omeath, Greenore and Carlingford at the weekend (6 October 2007). They worked in groups under the general supervision of Dr Dennis Pringle and Dr Padraig Duffy of The Department of Geography, NUI Maynooth. Topics they canvassed included, infrastructure, planning, cancer and health issues, the proposed development of Greenore port facilities, shopping preferences. The leaders of each of the small teams which had worked in the different areas presented orally their findings to their peers at a formal session of Cooley Environmental and Health Group which took place beginning at 11.00 a.m. on Sunday morning (7 October 2007). The combined presentations painted an interesting picture of the Cooley Peninsula and its inhabitants including questions of a social and political nature. The session concluded at 1.00 p.m. when the party from Maynooth and the representatives of Cooley Environmental and Health Group parted and dined separately at the venue, The Strand Hotel, Omeath.

Following their meal members of Cooley Environmental and Health Group went on to conduct a routine monthly meeting of their group. Preparations for the winter workshop on 26 January 2008 were advanced. It is hoped to have the final line-up of participants completed for the next meeting of the Group on Sunday 11 November 2007.

Treasurer, Sean Crudden, informed the meeting that the local engineering firm, Bellurgan, had come on board joining perennial sponsors (Ballymascanlon Hotel Golf and Leisure Club, Cooley Sand and Gravel Co and Cooley Distillery plc.) as sponsors of www.cooleyehg.com which is Cooley Environmental and Health Group’s official web-site.

It was decide to try to beef up the "latest news" page of the website.
