Say it loud, "I'm mad and I'm proud". That's the message of Mad Pride, the first event of its type to be held in Ireland, on Sunday, June 8 in Fitzgerald's Park, Cork.
The brainchild of John McCarthy, a Cork-based campaigner for the rights of people suffering from mental illness, "Mad Pride" aims to dispel commonly held misconceptions about mental illness.
The day itself has a firm emphasis on fun for all the family. According to John McCarthy, there will be no leaflets, no preaching and lectures, just "a bit of craic".
Mad Pride Ireland
Fitzgeralds Park, Cork, 8th June 2008
Time: 1pm - 5pm
On Sunday, June 8th 2008 Cork will host the first Annual International Mad Pride Day. A fun filled day for all the family at Fitzgerald’s Park. This important event will be highlighting the normality of Madness to the wider community in an effort to break down barriers and open minds to the need to address one of the country’s hidden problems.
So what is Mad Pride about? Mad Pride is about fun, community, family and facing up to the fact that Mental Illness does not have to be a lonely or hopeless affair. Mad Pride is not about bombarding people with pamphlets extolling the virtues of one approach over another it is more to show the world that Madness is an everyday occurrence that affects us all and can be dealt with openly, lovingly and without stigma.

The current Met forecast http://www.met.ie/ is looking good! Sunny and 20 degrees plus in the South. John MacCarthy's own blog http://madpride.wordpress.com/ is the best guide to what is actually booked and confirmed for the day - as one radio interview put it, "a festival like Gay Pride to promote diversity and tolerance", so it has to happen before we know.
Well done on organising this - we want one in Galway next!
