I'm reproducing this post here because I think it needs wider circulation. I hope the original poster will forgive my boldness but It is an important message that should get out to the widest possible audience. Basically, under instruction from the EU, we will be giving private investors the interest on 28 billion of bank debt instead of paying it back to the Irish central bank as is currently the case, all with barely a murmur from the Irish media. Meanwhile the distraction storm rages on over a piddling 280 million which MIGHT be repaid to junior bond holders some of which MAY actually be local credit unions etc who are very beneficial to our economy. Furthermore If interest rates rise in the future we WILL be crucified by huge wasted interest repayments to greedy vulture capitalists. Meanwhile the media have us pissing and moaning over a hypothetical 280 million which MIGHT be repaid mainly to the likes of our own credit unions which will be peanuts compared to these other interest payments most likely going to foreign vulture capitalists ... read full story / add a comment

This article examines the Transatlantic Free Trade agreement and it's potential repercussions.
In 2010 the US mining and gas company, Renco, managed to successfully avoid having to pay compensation to Peruvian locals who were harmed due to pollution by their companies by successfully using a provision of the Peru-US Trade Agreement[1]. Not satisfied with avoiding having to pay compensation, the company has since demanded $800 million from the Peruvian government as they argue that one of the companies they own, Doe Run, was forced into bankruptcy due to an expensive pollution clean-up which the Peruvian government required Doe Run to conduct [2]. ... read full story / add a comment

Why is the current situation in Ukraine happening? Why are the US funding and driving this insane provocative campaign on Russia's doorstep at this time? Why are European leaders shooting themselves in the foot by supporting this instead of building closer economic tioes with Russia? Why are the media in lockstep demonising Putin and Russia. Who benefitted from the downing of MH17 and how? This is an analysis of some of the events in Ukraine and their possible motivations from the lens of US hegemony over Europe, maintaining their position as world reserve currency, and controlling the world's major oil and gas reserves ... read full story / add a comment

30 Aug - 5 Sept This year NATO will have their next summit at Celtic Manor Resort, in Newport, south Wales. In early September 2014, “world leaders” – all directly responsible for untold death, illegal torture flights, and wars fought purely to protect Western business interests and resource supply routes – will gather on the edge of this historic Welsh city. Many people from Newport, Cardiff, Bristol and beyond, will oppose the summit and use a diversity of tactics against it. We, an anti-capitalist, anti-militarist network in South Wales, plan to facilitate mobilisations and provide space for workshops, skill-shares and social events. We are organising without leaders as we do not agree with bosses or bombs. ... read full story / add a comment

The filming of scenes for Star Wars: Episode VII began yesterday on Skellig Michael in Co Kerry. Many have expressed outrage at the underhanded way in which this information was kept from the Irish public until a few days ago. The Irish Independent has learnt that when negotiations began over six months ago it was feared if news of the proposed filming leaked out it could attract opposition from conservation groups. Also, At a time when Gaza is suffering a genocide at the hands of the Israeli government, the Irish government has underhandedly permitted Disney, (a company which is on every boycott list of companies which support Israel), who acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4.05 billion (wiki), to come into Ireland and film on one of our most sacred and ancient sites. ... read full story / add a comment

The term ‘gentrification’ was coined in 1964 by sociologist – Ruth Glass. She defined it as a change in the social structure and housing market in working class areas. She explained – "One by one, many of the working class quarters have been invaded by the middle class - upper and lower ... Once this process of 'gentrification' starts in a district it goes on rapidly until all or most of the working class occupiers are displaced and the whole social character of the district is changed" (Glass, 1964, p.xvii). ... read full story / add a comment

Fascist elements are among the protesters in Kiev. They are armed and are shooting at police. They are using the cover of protesters to advance a fascist coup. Violent clashes between police and protesters yesterday in Kiev mark an escalation of the campaign by the pro-Western opposition to oust Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. The opposition, backed by the United States and German governments, aims to install a far-right regime committed to integrating Ukraine within the European Union and implementing its demands for austerity measures. Bloody street-fighting erupted when opposition protesters marched on parliament, demanding it pass a planned law to decrease Yanukovych’s powers. When the vote went against them, the opposition supporters attacked the headquarters of the ruling Party of the Regions. Clashes between police and protesters erupted and spread throughout the city. ... read full story / add a comment

Stephen Donnelly, in an aticle in the independent has highlighted the government's complete lack of interest in the 13,000 mortgage holders from Irish Nationwide. In an excellent article he bares the reality of how current government's neo liberal ideology takes precedence over the suffering of families in mortgage arrears and how foreign vulture capitalists are allowed to get a large discount on these houses but the families actually living in them and supporting the local economy are prevented from getting the option of such a discount ... read full story / add a comment

Serbia’s Srdja Popovic is known by many as a leading architect of regime changes in Eastern Europe and elsewhere since the late-1990s, and as one of the co-founders of Otpor!, the U.S.-funded Serbian activist group which overthrew Slobodan Milošević in 2000. Lesser known, an exclusive Occupy.com investigation reveals that Popovic and the Otpor! offshoot CANVAS (Centre for Applied Nonviolent Action and Strategies) have also maintained close ties with a Goldman Sachs executive and the private intelligence firmStratfor (Strategic Forecasting, Inc.), as well as the U.S. government. Popovic’s wife also worked at Stratfor for a year. These revelations come in the aftermath of thousands of new emails released by Wikileaks’ “Global Intelligence Files.” The emails reveal Popovic worked closely with Stratfor, an Austin, Texas-based private firm that gathers intelligence on geopolitical events and activists forclients ranging from the American Petroleum Institute and Archer Daniels Midland to Dow Chemical, Duke Energy, Northrop Grumman, Intel and Coca-Cola. ... read full story / add a comment

In 2012 the attempt by the government to Quebec to introduce a 75% fee hike was defeated by the organisation of a mass student strike that lasted over 6 months. That fee increase was part of the global process of imposing the privatisation and commodification of education. Since the victory, organisers of the strike have been being doing speaking tours to aid the process whereby "youth and students everywhere are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to organize as a means to defend education as a social right". In September this tour reaches Ireland where we need to hear how a sustained and militant student movement that can win is built. ... read full story / add a comment
