The Irish language name for Smithfield Square in Dublin is Margadh na Feirme, which reflects the fact that the area has been a market for a very long time. Cattle were once driven in from Meath and sold on the square, as well as poultry and other livestock. Horses have always been traded here. read full story / add a comment

A protest of Sligo and Letrim women converged on the Dail this early afternoon, with Balloons, a pipe-band and attendant politicians (from all parties except PD's). The Junior Minister for Health (FF) came out and addressed the crowd, some of who were tired and upset. After a battery of 'political suits' someone had the bright idea to put the women on the platform and the stories came out. They have said that they will no longer travel to access treatment which they have worked and paid for. They said they do not require a two tier health system and that indeed they have a centre of excellence already. They spoke of leaving home and family with query breast cancer and having to access bus, train or taxi to be there for their kids. Largely they said 'enough'. read full story / add a comment

This morning the DOHC [Department of Health and Children] press released on the OECD report on Healthcare. The report is set in a time period that ends at 2005. The DOHC decided not to add the link onto their website so I am publishing it here. Apparently we are doing quite well on Health, a bit of critical underspend and the necessity for the department to juggle the figures. Of course the 2007 Breast Cancer Crisis is not mentioned on this file,but directly under the link there can be found the statement by Ms Harney on the issue (dated last week- the scandal broke on the 4th of September). read full story / add a comment

On the 04/09/07 there was a press release detailing a possible mis-diagnosis problem in relation to the mammogram service at Portlaoise Hospital, the press release said that there were possibly 5,000 women effected and there was no press release from Mary Harney's Department. The
Hospital board and the HSE managed the timed release of materials including the fact that
many of the patients had been on the Treatment Purchase Fund Scheme. This info emanated
in the direct aftermath of Ms Harney's travelling to Barrington's Hospital in Cork where up to
1,000 women were similarly effected. Today there is a press release from DOHC which is
written in response to emergent details of 8 women with a diagnosis of cancer who had

I signed up to BT broadband over two months ago. Not only did the hook up the wrong house, but they billed me for it, insisted nothing wrong happened, and are dawdling over my What's worse, their call centre takes ages to do anything, not surprising, given that one of their agents admitted to me that there were only 10 people working there the day I spoke to her, when the staffing level is supposed to be 60. Anyhow, sick of waiting for the always promised call back, I went hunting for the bigger fish. read full story / add a comment

Having a birth plan in Ireland is a necessity if you want to have a normal low intervention birth. Learn about what's on offer in your hospital and prepare for the kind of birth you want. read full story / add a comment

this started as a letter to my philosophy lecturers expressing my disatisfaction about the passiveness of acadmic philosophy. Then i got carried away and started to spew my frustrations about youth orientated consumerism. I never hear this subject, that i believe is the root to most of the flaws in society today, debated in the media. I sent it to the major newspapers but got no response. The Irish Times this Morning 08/09/09 features headlines regarding Eamon Ryan's 'Signal' that the Green Party may be supporting the Referendum on the EU proposed for this country in 2008. The paper's Front page states that Minister Ryan believes that the 'accrued benefits' of EU membership signal a change in attitude by the Greens toward their EU policy. This is media manipulation of the highest order which accomplishes two things:- 1. It assures investors in Corporate Europe that the Greens are 'onside'. 2.It is part of a campaign instigated by Dick Roche TD, who assumes responsibility for both selling the public and manistream media the benefits of EU expansion and corporatism. read full story / add a comment

Last week, Joan Burton, a highly talented finance spokesperson and stalwart of the Labour Party withdrew her candidacy from the running for leadership of the Labour Party (a centrist concern with a pre-election pact with a right wing party). She cited lack of internal party support for her decision and nominated herself for deputy leader. This is a problem, for the preceeding forty eight hours The Irish independent Newspaper had been running the Gilmore story on both front page and editorial columns as The main bet for leadership, There is no other candidate declared. Deputy leader Liz Mc Manus is delaying nomination until later in the week. The profiling of women in irish politics, especially in mainstream parties relegates women to secondary positions, indeed a cursory glance at the papers indicates that politics is indeed a 'Job for the Boys', Tony O Reilly says so and he makes a lot of profit out of it. read full story / add a comment

Increasingly the patient is no longer seen as a passive recipient of medical treatment. Attempts are being made, at least at an ideological level, to involve patients more in the design of medication and to lend some weight to what patients really think of medication and how it is affecting them. Naturally there are life saving chemicals like penicillin, insulin and cytamen (for vitamin B12) but there is a plethora of more optional drugs on the market not least a whole cabinet of neuroleptic drugs. From my own observations as a patient for over 30 years attending clinics and hospitals throughout that period it is unclear whether many of these drugs have an authentic role in (a) preserving life or (b) in improving the quality of life of the patient. read full story / add a comment

Rooming in’ involves the care of a newborn infant in a cot near the mother’s bed instead of in a nursery during their hospital stay. This has very many positive advantages for the mother and baby in terms of bonding and getting to know the new baby’s routine in the early days of its life and also the instant availability of the mother for feeding, a recognised bonding time be it bottle or breast. Rooming in also has many advantages for maternity hospitals in terms reduction in requirements for nursery spaces in hospitals and therefore, reduction in numbers of staff required to supervise the nurseries and take care of the infants. Most Irish maternity hospitals operate a full rooming in policy but the question is - Do Irish Maternity Hospitals support rooming in? read full story / add a comment |
