As once again Cork's mainstream trade unions declined to publicly celebrate the everlasting memorial day to working peoples' struggles worldwide, it falls to Solidarity Books/Workers Solidarity Movement Cork Branch and the Independent Workers Union to mark this most important of days. A day of public talks and a community meal was organised by the local branch of the WSM at Solidarity Books, which complemented excellently the annual May Day march through the city streets this evening organised as usual by the Independent Workers Union. read full story / add a comment

Local Cork bands The Altered Hours and Mashed Chicken and DJ Dr. Fiasco will play a fundraiser for Solidarity Books in Cruiscin Lan on Thursday 1st April starting at 8pm. Cork WSM, who have organized the event, anticipate a good turnout. Since opening its doors in December 2009, Solidarity Books, a non-profit radical book shop and meeting space, has become a hub for the local Douglas Street Community. This was most clearly seen in the recent hugely successful Douglas Street celebration of International Women’s Day. read full story / add a comment

Approximately 40 people packed in Solidarity Books in Cork to hear Elsie Haas (a Haitian film-maker and journalist, based in Paris) and Jose Antonio Gutierrez (of the Latin American Solidarity Centre in Dublin) talk about the political and economic history of Haiti and how the recent US intervention in the country, following the earthquake, is just a continuation of the UN-led occupation since 2004, following on from 200 years of occupations and imperialism. read full story / add a comment

In addition to incinerators at Ringaskiddy, the a toxic dump at Haulbowline and a long list of other indignities Cork Harbour is suffering it is now under attack from another direction. The state body responsible for electricity distribution since 2006, Eirgrid are going ahead with plans to install a submarine power cable between Aghada and Cuskinny Bay.

Cork Harbour's motto “a safe harbour for all” is quite laughable for the marine life and the flora and fauna of the area who seem to be excluded from this pledge.
