We've been in Dublin since Wednesday with Welsh members of Chelsea Manning's family http://manningfamilyfund.org/2013/11/27/rocky-road-to-d...blin/ enjoying warm and enthusiastic Irish hospitality from AFRI and many others during three days of solidarity events, meetings, meals and media interviews. There are Irish connections on both sides of Chelsea's family: maternal grandfather from Rathmines, Dublin and one set of paternal great grandparents (both Mannings) from a village in Cork. Chelsea was flown out to Iraq via Shannon airport, the use of which by the US military compromises Ireland's supposed neutrality. There will be more to report back later, but for now here are a few photos from the visit. Over the last couple of days we have witnessed massive media hysteria about the case of Maria, a young girl supposedly abducted by a Roma couple in Greece. DNA tests and Lombroso-style racial profiling [1] have come into action in a case that has stirred the irrational anxiety that feeds racism and bigotry. Beyond the fact that child abduction is a serious issue, the "whiteness" and "blondeness" of the alleged victim have been emphasised together with the "Roma" condition of the alleged culprits. Let us remember that this is taking place in Greece, a country where blatant racism (as expressed by Golden Dawn) is on the rise, so there are good reasons to be cautious about this whole case. read full story / add a comment

It seems very likely that the US, backed by UK,France etc, is going to attack Syria very soon. Regardless of what we think of the Assad regime and its crimes we should oppose this intervention which will only make matters worse and is only designed to further imperialist interests. As we don’t know exactly when this will occur the Irish Anti-War Movement is calling a protest at the Spire for 6pm ON THE DAY OF THE ATTACK or THE NEXT DAY IF THE ATTACK IS AT NIGHT. read full story / add a comment

The Alliance for Animal Rights group AFAR wish to condemn the IGB who are fully responsible for the serious injuring of Four healthy Greyhounds who were made race at the ETS Derby in Shelbourne Park last week. All of these dogs were badly injured at the track, including being ‘KOd’ knocked over and sustaining bone breakages including broken legs and hocks. We surmise some of these dogs risk being killed as their racing careers are most likely ended and they are possibly only of use as stud dogs. read full story / add a comment

AFAR wish to condemn the incident at Dublin zoo which occurred two days ago which left a two year old child unconscious, and with deep stomach and arm injuries caused by an animal attack by a Tapir . Apart from the obvious stupidity of allowing a child into an enclosure confining a wild animal with their young, Dublin Zoo is guilty of imprisoning, confining, drugging and using wild animals for profit on an ongoing basis. They [Dublin Zoo] admit themselves on their website that tapirs are always found near water and usually run into rivers to escape predators such as the jaguar. Where could this Mother and newborn escape to in the Zoo enclosure, to flee from what most likely was perceived as a threat from hearing the human child scream. read full story / add a comment

At the counter-demonstration to Youth Defence's "Rally for Life" march, I was manhandled and arrested for no reason by plain clothes police. In the van, I was pepper sprayed several times while handcuffed behind my back and pinned to the ground. I was kept in a cell for about two hours before being released without charge. This is my account of what happened. read full story / add a comment

This year's G8 promises to be different for a number of reasons. G8s and G8 protests have, by now, become something of a ritual. One where each side already knows the rules of the game. The great and good come together to discuss how they might set the world to right, and the protestors outside condemn them for not doing it quickly enough – or not really intending to do it at all. Charity is promised to Africa, and folks like Sir Bob Geldof will proclaim that a successful G8 has been had. Other folks will throw bricks and bottles at the police, and feel that they have stuck a blow for the cause. What cause exactly is not always clear. The media have a field day – a morning glimpse of presidents and prime ministers, and then spend the rest of the day with the unwashed outside; hoping that they will start a riot – or, at least, do something that looks good on camera and will fill thirty seconds on primetime news. And the general public have a little bit of entertainment to lighten the daily drudge of work, or more and more commonly, unemployment.
So why should the G8 Summit on the 17th and 18th of June 2013 be any different? read full story / add a comment
