international / eu / press release Friday June 13, 2008 13:18 by Campaign Against EU Constitution   text 3 comments (last - saturday june 14, 2008 22:44)

The Irish people have spoken. Contrary to the predictions of social and political turmoil, we believe that hundreds of millions of people across Europe will welcome the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty. The proposals to further reduce democracy, to militarise the EU and to let private business take over public services have been rejected. Lisbon is dead. Along with the EU Constitution from which it came, it should now be buried. read full story / add a comment

these are the main reasons why I and many Green party members are voting no to Lisbon and why we refused to campaign for a yes vote.
Reason no 1: REACH
Reason no 2: Nuclear power
Reason no 3: EU Corruption
Reason no 4: EU Police state. read full story / add a comment

A photo-review of WSM activities in Munster cities during the Lisbon referendum campaign. The Cork WSM branch, with the help of other comrades from Limerick and Dublin, did 4 info stalls on the streets of Cork, Limerick and Waterford as part of our campaign activities. Each was blessed with good sunny weather and a public mood in some sympathy with our anarchist vote No message. We gave out thousands of leaflets, and made new contacts across the cities. It was also good to see what other campaigns were active on the ground across Munster. read full story / add a comment

Background information for the Irish referendum on June 12: The EU today lacks proper democratic procedures. The Lisbon Treaty boosts this lack of democracy making the EU even more remote to its citizens. This is the conclusion of a study by Michael Efler, Percy Vogel, Gerald Häfner, Roman Huber and Felix Wünsche. read full story / add a comment

In the last few days, Brian Cowen has stated that Ireland's future will be decided by the Lisbon Treaty Referendum. If, therefore, its ratification is so paramount with regard to the future of Ireland, and indeed Europe, then why are we the only nation voting on it? Surely, in any democracy, people are entitled to decide on issues which fundamentally shape their future, right? A half a billion people now live in the E.U., but only a few million are being asked for their opinion in a referendum being billed by Cowen as the most import in a generation. Either European democracy is well or truly a thing of the past, or Cowen, Kenny and Gilmore are exaggerating the importance of this referendum with a view to sparing their blushes on the corridors of power in Brussels. read full story / add a comment

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen is to attend a rally today to steady the resolve of Dublin FF supporters in a last ditch effort to get them to support the Lisbon Treaty. The event will take place at 2PM at the National College of Ireland in the IFSC.

The last ditch rally is an echo of the same tactic which was carried out last year in thegeneral election the Sunday before polling day.

Sources in the NO campaign said they would make their presence felt at the rally, to protest against the militarisation of the EU, amongst many other issues. read full story / add a comment

Dublin youth activists united in protest today outside the European Union house to urge a No! vote in this Thursday’s Lisbon Treaty referendum.

The protest, which included an open mic and street theatre, was jointly organised by Ógra Shinn Féin, and the Connolly Youth Movement, with members of the IPSC and Anarchist activists also in attendance.

Following a very imaginative and visible protest which had Brian Cowen and Charlie McCreevy present, there was an extensive canvass of the thronged Grafton Street asking people to secure a better deal for Ireland, and vote No!

Five years ago, an EU Court of Auditors official informed his Secretary General of his suspicions of fraud and blackmail being practiced at the institution. After meeting with a refusal to examine the case, one yeare ago, he urged the Court´s President to react to the Secretary General´s failure to act. The only reaction he received was a disciplinary procedure being launched against him. read full story / add a comment
