ALLIANCE FOR CHOICE CALLS ‘D’ CASE A TRAGEDY WAITING TO HAPPEN It was only a matter of time before another distressed young woman was forced to remind the Irish people of the disgraceful situation facing women in crisis pregnancies in this country. The HSE’s refusal to permit a young woman in their custody to terminate her non-viable pregnancy is consistent with the hypocrisy exhibited by successive Irish governments who have refused to deal with the issue. It is truly outrageous that this vulnerable young woman should be further traumatised by having to ask the courts for the right to terminate a pregnancy that can, at best, result in the birth of a child with no possibility of life. read full story / add a comment

The LPR in Poland had attempted at the end of 2006 to force through an amendment to the article 38 of the Polish Constitution which would have transcended the already legislated for abortion rights of Polish women. The amendment was to have read ' to protect human life from the moment of Conception'. The campaigners launched a global letter of protest which went through many women's groups and a political campaign to raise awareness of the issues surrounding women's reproductive rights. The Vote happened and the LPR lost. Marek Jurek has been forced to resign. During the almost five month campaign which saw deep division in the Polish Parliament, the Alicia Tysiac case was heard in Strasbourg, The ECHR ruled that the Polish State had failed in their legal obligation to provide the mother of three with a legal abortion on medical grounds, despite three doctors advising that she would lose her sight if she was to proceed with her pregnancy. read full story / add a comment

The European Court for Human Rights today held that Poland was in violation of the human Rights of Alicja Tysiak who had sought an abortion due to a medical condition which had caused irreversible eye damage. She had been refused a certificate authorising the abortion, which had left her forced to continue with the pregnancy. By Law Poland allows women to have abortions when their health is in danger, in the Tysiac case the Polish State had failed to meet with it's legal obligation. read full story / add a comment

"Oh it's international Women's Day and so many issues have been co-opted and the 'F' word is become a dirty word for some people, what shall we do?" We decided that the source of a lot of our bad legislation which mitigates against women and children, especially the Criminal Law (sexual Offences) Bill 2006, emanted from the Offices of the Tanaiste and Minister for Justice, Michael Mc Dowell. We decided, therefore to 'unmanage' him. read full story / add a comment

The Union of Students in Ireland organised today a protest about the blood ban operated by the Department of Health on Gay men. It is now widely accepted that the best way to ensure a safe blood supply is to refuse blood from anyone engaged in high risk behaviour - rather than the current situation where hetrosexuals engaged in high risk promiscuous sexual activity will have their blood accepted while gay men involved low risk monogamous relationships will have their blood refused. read full story / add a comment
