Pedro Iñaki Pérez Beotegui (alias "Wilson") died yesterday, on the fourth anniversary of the Al Qaeda M11 bombing of Madrid, in Vitoria in the Basque Country at 60 years of age. As "Wilson" he led the group who in 1973 rented a flat on at Calle Claudio Coello 104, Madrid overlooking the road which Franco's prime minister & expected successor Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco used every morning to travel to work after mass in an armoured car. For several weeks the four members of the team, codenamed "Ogre" tunnelled under the street and then placed 80kg of explosives which they detonated on the 20th of December 1973. The car in which Carrero Blanco travelled was sent 20 metres into the air & over a five storey building in the blast. The assassination is cited in almost every account of how the Spanish state passed from an authoritiarian military dictatorship to the process of "transition" upon Franco's death without named successor to the European social democracy it is today. read full story / add a comment

There are fences across the proposed route each side of the Rath Lugh woods. At around 8am this morning a member of the Rath Lugh camp heard machinery passing by the rath. 6 of us went out and saw 2 dump trucks and 2 diggers outside the fence, coming from the Baronstown direction. Each digger was 40 tonnes, and wanted to drive though at the same time! A large crowd of SIAC, Ferrovial and Wills Bros workers were present, 2 members of the Garda Siochana were also present, both in incomplete uniforms; they didn't wear hats, one of them wasn't displaying his ID number on his shoulder. We explained no machinery would be passing by Rath Lugh, that the area is preserved and it is a criminal offence to interfere with or damage a national monument. The weight and vibrations of the machinery will affect the monument on the esker, and so endanger all of Rath Lugh. The workers took absolutely no heed of anything we told them. read full story / add a comment

Over 40 people flew out to Madrid last weekend to participate in a number of events centered around a commemoration of Tyrone poet, Charlie Donnelly, who was killed in February 1937 in the latter stages of the Battle of Jarama. 180,000 signatures on a petition have failed to lobby the Wikipedia foundation to remove images of the founder of Islam from entries in multiple languages available on the online encyclopedia. However, the illustrations are not nor are likely to be included in the arabic version or other lingustic portals associated with muslim sensibility. It might thus appear languages are sensitive. I have always suspected so, to be frank - perhaps more sensitive than the eye.., read full story / add a comment

We had decided to have our breakfast on the henge this morning. As I drove towards the N3 a low loader carrying a digger was driving towards Lismullen. Approx 10 protestors arrived in Lismullen, some from the road and some from Rath Lugh. Security were present during the entire time we were there. 2 protestors were assaulted within a few minutes of arriving. I tried to block the fuel coming out of the Lismullen carpark but Mark Cleary kept pushing me out of the way and the fuel tractor got away. Steve from Kildare, one of the security men assaulted another protestor, he was pulled from the fence and thrown onto the ground head first, and hurt his neck. read full story / add a comment

This morning, monday 6th jan '08 at 7 am, 11 of us split up into two groups. We went to the Ardsallagh Compound (site entrance 2.10) and Roestown (site entrance 2.1 ) . All the machinery was parked at these two sites for the past two weeks over Christmas. read full story / add a comment

On December 22nd 2007, itison.tv was launched with it's first project, Tara Saga. Tara Saga is now the third working title for a documentary project about the ancient site of Tara in Co. Meath, Ireland. The project was spurred by the controversial development of a motorway through this ancient landscape. read full story / add a comment

The NRA communications officer threatened the individual/s responsible for entering site to gather images with criminal damage and trespass while at the same time refusing media access .The soutterains were bulldozed that very afternoon. Now Rath Lugh under threat. read full story / add a comment

An Oral Parliamentary Question, regarding Garda 'Operation Bedrock' - which now appears to be an ongoing investigation into Tara campaigners, has been submitted to the Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan. If the Minister chooses to answer, it will take place on Thursday afternoon. If not, a written answer will come early next week. read full story / add a comment

For those following the Hidden History on Coolnacrease below is published a transcript of the Joe Duffy Liveline programme of Nov 6th 2007 on RTE. It features Jack Lane and Tom Carew. There is also a link to the transcript of the previous day's Liveline where the same topic was duscussed. I have tried to give the discussion verbatim where possible, but due to sound quality and the natural cadence of conversation, on occasion it wasn't possible to catch every word. RTE broadcast a 'Hidden History' programme on 23 October 2007, about the IRA shooting of Richard and Abraham Pearson of Coolacrease, near Cadamstown, Co. Offaly, in June 1921, during the War of Independence. It was made by Niamh Sammon and featured (unelected) Senator Eoghan Harris of the Sunday Independent. The programme was accused of editing interviews to encourage a view that the IRA in Offaly were sectarian, land grabbing, Catholic peasants. read full story / add a comment
