WATERFORD : BARBARIC PIG FARMER WHO USED SLEGE-HAMMER ON PIGS NOW ON THE TAX DEFAULTERS LIST. A farmer who single-handedly slaughtered almost 4,000 pigs in a frenzied attack after a banned food additive was discovered on his farm was ordered to pay over €71,000 in fines and legal costs. Pig farmer Thomas Galvin from Ballinamuck, Dungarvan, Co Waterford denied 29 charges brought against him. Galvin was found guilty of a string of offences including the movement of pigs onto and off restricted lands following the discovery of a highly toxic additive, Carbadox, in April 2002. read full story / add a comment

Hare coursing and foxhunt clubs crave good PR. In recent days they've got the opposite: Mega pop star Paoblo Nutini denounced bloodsports after attending a hunt ball in Westmeath without realising its connection to foxhunting...and then members of the Irish Council Against Blood Sports captured horrific footage of hare maulings at the so-called "Irish Cup" coursing festival at Limerick racecourse. Now one of the most important Irish cultural iniatives of recent decades has effectively disowned the cruel baiting of live animals for "sport"... read full story / add a comment

On February 23rd and 24th, members of an anti blood sports campaign group attended part of the so-called “Irish Cup” live hare coursing event, which was held on Limerick racecourse and sponsored by multi millionaire businessman JP McManus. They managed, in spite of an official ban on “unauthorised photography” that apples to all hare coursing events, to film some of the action. read full story / add a comment

Re- THE BAN BY DUNNES STORES ON ANIMAL CHARITY COLLECTORS. ……POSSIBLY A REASON FOR THE 'CHARITY COLLECTORS 'STOPPAGE BY DUNNES STORES ARE BLOODSPORTS PEOPLE REALLY THIS NASTY??? We refer to the ban by the Dunnes Store’s chain on allowing Animal charities to collect at their many shops. This has shocked many welfare groups as no explanation has be given despite radio and newspaper coverage. We were informed yesterday by a posting on the PRO RACING and COURSING forum GREYHOUND NUTS that the once vocal Pro stag- hunting group Rise [rural Ireland says Enough]were behind the ban by Dunnes Stores. We enclose the page from the blog below which is run by Tom Brett of Cork. Unfortunately as Dunnes Stores will not answer questions put to them we cannot verify this revelation. We invite you to investigate further in an effort to explain the strange ‘less than compassionate ‘ stance that they have adopted. AFAR feels to alienate any worthwhile cause without explanation is unjust. read full story / add a comment

The Association of Hunt Saboteurs will be holding a lively demonstration outside Dail Eireann on 1st February to coincide with the start of the ICC coursing Final in Powerstown Park Clonmel. We will have some Dail members present and will be again highlighting the upcoming Private members bill to ban coursing being brought before the Dail by TDs Clare daly and Maureen O Sullivan. Hare Coursing is a melting pot of many ills that need to be extinguished. Focus on indoctrinating children. A focus of this year’s final seems to be the influx of children expected at Clonmel’s Powerstown Park. • A Greyhound supporters forum GREYHOUND NUTS is discussing the fact that lots of school children will attend this event read full story / add a comment

WICKLOW County Council / ISPCA REFUSE RESCUE GROUPS ACCESS to SAVE ‘POUND DOGS’ LIVES - DEMAND THAT WICKLOW COUNCIL MEMBERS ALLOW THESE DOGS TO BE SAVED/rehomed BY REPUTABLE RESCUES The ISPCA run the WICKLOW pound on behalf of Wicklow county council. There are 2 dog wardens employed who have been doing the job for years and obviously by their stance they obviously think killing is perfectly acceptable. They are obstructing all efforts to allow rescues in to help the dogs and have the backing of the council, the ISPCA do not intervene. According to sources there has been no effective governance of the pound by the council at all - they just sign a cheque for them every year and don't want to know. The council don’t appear to care or have a clue about the pound and insist all the dogs they kill are unsuitable for rehoming (44% in 2010 and 28% last year) Dogs Trust can take some dogs as does Wicklow spca but there are lots of other dogs that need help. read full story / add a comment
