Antoinette will speak at a public meeting on next Thursday 22nd in the Portview hotel in Dun Laoghaire at 8pm. She will speak alongside Margaret Watson, who was housed by the council in June after two weeks on a similiar protest. Richard Boyd Barrett from the SWP, who are supporting and assisting Antoinettes campaign, and the TD's CIaran Cuffe of the Green Party and Eamonm Gilmore of Labour, who have both been vocal in highlighting the housing crisis. You can support Antoinette by dropping by the picket line anytime for a chat and to keep her company. The council, fearful of an avalanche of similiar protests, are taking a very hard line on Antoinettes case, refusing at tthis point to even meet with her and her supporters; so the protest may go on for some time to come and Antoinette would appreciate any and all support people and organisations can give to her. The fires which killed over 30 people mostly children in Paris this summer, brought impetus to the French migrant support groups, and housing organisations. Chirac expressed shock and horror. De Villepin's government promised action and a "census" of slum housing where France's african migrants live. Pretty soon after the police moved into forceably evict the houses on the census list, arresting those within, processing them for deportation and sending them off to the migrant detention centres "for their own good". Chirac collapsed the same day. Early this morning a squatted building at 21 rue Maroc (19th arrrond) was evicted in the same style. read full story / add a comment

Last nights fire in Paris which killed 17 people most of whom were children is just one in a series of incidents which bring attention to the appaling conditions mostly african migrants are being housed in. The group "DAL (droit au logement)" estimates 50,000 people in the "migrants, illegal migrants, asylum seekers, refugee" category are housed dangerously in the city. read full story / add a comment

Gig starts at 8 o'clock Come join Street Seen for a few drinks and a dance to good music provided by homeless DJ's. Street Seen is a not for profit homeless paper. The Ernst Kirchweger Haus (EKH) in Vienna, Austria was squatted in 1990. During the past 15 years it became an internationalist, anti-fascist, self-run space. Since midnight, 2/3 of the house is without contracts again, so the people inside are now preparing for the case of eviction and mobilise to make public pressure for a written, law-valid guarantee. read full story / add a comment

2nd day of a strike against Mugabe in Zimbabwe sees people up north claim he's finally gone bonkers. *finally*? Oh dear, Mugabe has been around as long as any other 80+year old leader, he's up there with paisley and fraga. you can't teach old dogs new tricks & generally everyone has their own nichname for them. You could learn a lot by comparing and contrasting them, their pals and foes indeed. Mugabe has knocked down houses all over the shop, you know that, but his reasons are very very Western capitalist, he's combatting the "informal sector", these people were fueling the black market, living in non-council approved houses, you'd never get that in ireland... read full story / add a comment

Dun Laoghire County Council is refusing to provide housing for Margaret Watson and her 25-year-old daughter Fran despite huge public support for their plight. Margaret and her growing band of supporters have now been picketing Dun Laoghaire County Hall for eight days. At night Margaret sleeps outside the County Hall in a tent donated by a prominent local artist. Over 3500 bypassers have now signed her petition in support of her demand for immediate housing. read full story / add a comment

The great Housing rip off Whether we pay rent or a mortgage, the cost of keeping a roof over our heads takes up a huge proportion of our income - those of us who are 'lucky' enough to be in a position to do so. Everywhere we look - both in Dublin and other cities and also in small rural villages and towns - the skyline is dotted with cranes and houses and apartments seem to be springing up everywhere. read full story / add a comment
