The National Hungerstrike Youth Weekend 2009 is taking place in Tyrone from the 14 – 16 August. The weekend of events is being organised to coincide with the National Hungerstrike March, and will also fall on the actual 100th Anniversary of Na Fianna Éireann, Sunday 16th August.

The main themes of the weekend will be the ‘1981 Hungerstrike’, and ‘A Century of Youth in Struggle’, with public talks, a republican tour, Na Fianna Éireann dinner dance, mural and plaque unveiling, rebel night, and the National Hungerstrike march helping bring people together and educate them on both.

The weekend is expected to be Ógra Shinn Féin’s biggest event of the year, with the republican youth movement and international guests turning out in numbers to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Na Fianna Éireann on Sunday the 16th August. They will unveil a plaque to the first national republican youth organisation, and then form up in a large Na Fianna contingent in the Hungerstrike march.

There is no money left, it’s all gone. At least that’s what you might think after listening to Peter Robinson, Caitriona Ruane, and the parade of capitalist economists and pundits who parrot this nonsense. Ógra Shinn Féin in Strabane have called on people of conscience in the local community to boycott Israeli goods and companies, in protest at Israel’s murderous onslaught on the people of Gaza.

The youth movement has said that this is a practical action in which people who feel disgusted at Israeli terror can take to support the beleaguered people of the Gaza strip.

On the day that 1983 Long Kesh Escapee Pól Brennan will go to court in the USA to fight for his release, West Tyrone Ógra Shinn Féin have sent a message of solidarity and called for his “immediate freedom so that he can fight his deportation freely and fairly.”

Pól Brennan has been imprisoned in US jails from January this year, because when he was stopped at a routine road block, his work permit had expired. Pól is not undocumented and has a work authorisation permit in the system since 2006, but he has neither received or been refused the permit.

What began as a simple bureaucratic misunderstanding was soon escalated by the US Homeland Security who has also activated a deportation order for Pól. This completely ignores a US court ruling in 2000 which allowed Pól hearings for political asylum which are still ongoing.
