The Right2Water campaign has announced details of local events planned for Saturday January 23rd to highlight the campaign’s ongoing demand for the abolition of water charges. Nearly 30 different events are planned in a range of locations from Cavan to Dublin to Cork.</P><P>Campaign warns public opposition to water charges will be reflected in ballot boxes
The Right2Water campaign has announced details of local events planned for Saturday January 23rd to highlight the campaign’s ongoing demand for the abolition of water charges. In a statement, the Right2Water campaign today said:
</p><p>
<em>“As the Government parties gear up for a General Election, they need to be told loud and clear that public opposition to water charges remains unabated – and will be reflected in the ballot box come polling day.
</p><p>
“Not only are water charges being used to give tax breaks to the richest in society and corporations but this Government have now opened the door to the privatisation of our human Right2Water. We are the only EU country with zero water poverty because we already pay for our water through progressive general taxation based on need, not means. We are determined it will stay that way.
</p><p>
“On January 23rd, people around the country will have an opportunity to remind their local politicians that water will be the number one issue in this election campaign”</em>, the statement concluded.

The next set of Right2Water demonstrations take place on Saturday, 23rd January 2016 in locations all across the country. Most events take place at 2pm but some are earlier so check the details for your own local area.

<li> Corporations use 90% of all water – yet are expected to pay only 22% of
the costs.
<li> Households only use 10% of all water – but are now expected to pay up
to 78% of the costs.
<li> Successive Irish governments have cut water funding by 65% since 2008 –
and then say we need water charges to because our infrastructure needs
investment.
<li> When all of the costs of metering are taken into account, involving installation,
maintenance, administration and replacement, the cost for water
provision DOUBLES from an average of €350 per household to €700 per
household!
<li> The Irish government has used the implementation of water charges to
give tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest in our society.
</ul>

<b>Privatisation is the real agenda! </b>
International research shows that domestic water meters don’t make any
difference to the amount of water used by families.

The proposed expenditure on water metering would mean spending more
than €1 billion which we don’t have, on something we don’t need!” Engineers

Then why are they bringing in charges? Because water is highly profitable!

<li> In the UK, water prices have increased by DOUBLE the amount of average
goods since 1989
<li> Water companies make DOUBLE the annual profits of non-financial companies
in the UK
<li> The dividends paid to the owners of water companies in the UK are DOUBLE
that returned to an average private non-financial firm.
