"The Greening of Cuba" - Film Screening

On Thursday 20th January in Donegal Town a special film screening of the inspirational film "the Greening of Cuba" will take place in Simple Simon's, The Diamond, Donegal Town.

On Thursday 20th January 2011 a special film screening "The Greening of Cuba" will take place in 'Simple Simon's' shop which is located on the Diamond, Donegal Town. The film documents the incredible story of how the little Caribbean island of Cuba undertook the task of becoming self-sufficient in food through converting vacant land to community gardens and urban farms.

One of the organisers of the film screening, Jim McLaughlin commented "this incredibly inspiring film highlights the amazing achievements in Cuba regarding the development of community control over the production and distribution of healthy nutritious food. The film illustrates the resilience of Cuba and the fact of how a small nation have achieved food sovereignty, ensuring food security and sustainable food systems for the benefit of all".

The Freedom Film Club is a platform to highlight issues throughout the world which predominatly remain hidden. Film's already shown have included, documentaries about the situation in Tibet. There is no cover charge to see the film's though participants are asked to consider leaving a donation to cover costs.

McLaughlin concluded, "'The Greening of Cuba' is an heroic story of how a small island came back from the brink of destruction to become a thriving and vibrant self-sustaining community. It provides us all with with real life possibilities of how a people acting in unison for the benefit of all can achieve great things".

The film is part of a range of activities that have been occuring in and around the South Donegal Town over the past number of years, with the development of community garden initiatives, cultural and language activities, grass roots producers groups and unemployed social clubs. All activities are focused on developing a dynamic, vibrant, self-sustaining and proactive community.
