While it's welcome that the JCVI has finally ended boosters for under-50s, the data the decision is based on are still skewed towards the vaccines. And why did it take three months to let us know?

The Government seems determined to push ahead in the next few months with the ratification of two important treaties: the “Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union” and the revised “Treaty on the European Stability Mechanism.”

The two treaties would make member-states of the euro zone into regimes of economic austerity, involving deeper and deeper cuts in public expenditure, increases in indirect taxes, reductions in wages, sustained liberalisation of markets, and the privatisation of public property. ... read full story / add a comment

I want to take up some of their points relating to the Household tax campaign, which I object to and to offer what I think is the real situation with the campaign. ... read full story / add a comment

The following open letter concerning hydraulic gas fracturing in Ireland was recently sent to the Pat Rabbitte, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources. Several other people have written to the minister and have received no reply.

This is an important issue because it concerns contaminating the land and water for the benefit of just a few over the rights and interests of many and protection of the environment. ... read full story / add a comment

Let's start with red lines. Here it is, Washington’s ultimate red line, straight from the lion’s mouth. Only last week Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said of the Iranians, “Are they trying to develop a nuclear weapon? No. But we know that they're trying to develop a nuclear capability. And that's what concerns us. And our red line to Iran is do not develop a nuclear weapon. That's a red line for us.”

How strange, the way those red lines continue to retreat. Once upon a time, the red line for Washington was “enrichment” of uranium. Now, it’s evidently an actual nuclear weapon that can be brandished. Keep in mind that, since 2005, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei has stressed that his country is not seeking to build a nuclear weapon. The most recent National Intelligence Estimate on Iran from the U.S. Intelligence Community has similarly stressed that Iran is not, in fact, developing a nuclear weapon (as opposed to the breakout capacity to build one someday). ... read full story / add a comment

We Need To Be the Change that we want, we can complain all day long but that will achieve nothing, we need to take direct action against these bullies, these criminals, if we are too scared to do it for ourselves then we should do it for our children, any parent worth their salt would do whatever it takes to protect their child and that is exactly how we need to see this situation, what are we doing to protect our kids from what is being taken from them now and what will be increasingly taken from them as they grow up? ... read full story / add a comment

I'm shocked but not surprised to see yet another stealth tax by the Government this time on 115000 Pensioners who have their own as well as the State Pension. Many of them are now going to be up to €4400 per year for a single person or €8800 per year for a couple worse off because they'll now be paying tax on their Pensions which they worked hard for all their lives. Why don't the Revenue Commissioners go after all the big tax evaders instead of vulnerable and soft targets like the Pensioners? Not that the Pensioners will be a pushover as they showed a few years ago when they resisted the Government's attack on their Medical Cards. ... read full story / add a comment

We strongly condemn Thursday’s massacre at Sirnak in which 36 civilian Kurds were killed by Turkish air strikes. This year more than 4,500 people have been arrested under nebulous “terrorism” charges in Turkey, including dozens of journalists last week. This AKP-directed pogram, known as the KCK Case, began in 2009 against any Kurdish dissent in Turkey. Mayors, local councillors, journalists, human rights activists and Kurdish party workers are targeted. ... read full story / add a comment

Ports up and down the West Coast were blockaded, from Seattle to San Diego. The blockade was called in solidarity with longshore workers fighting a union-busting assault in Longview, Washington and port truckers seeking union recognition in the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach. This support should have been greeted. But now the class war on the West Coast docks is coming to a head, and it can't be waged from the outside. Bay Area labor has called for a caravan to Longview. The goal should be a real occupation of the terminal by the workers to prevent the loading of the scab cargo. Longshore militants have called on the longshore unions to shut down every port on the West Coast, and the East and Gulf Coasts, to smash EGT's union-busting. Can it be done? Yes, but only though sharp struggle against the pro-capitalist labor bureaucracy. ... read full story / add a comment

The response to the legislation on household tax has been very encouraging. A poll taken on Sunday by Newstalk after the launch of the campaign opposing the tax, showed over 70% indicated opposition and a determination not to pay. This is a great start to what will be one of the dominant campaigns in 2012.  There will be a consistent and vicious propaganda campaign by the establishment which has already begun. There will be intimidation and pressure on people who can face massive fines if they refuse to register for this charge before the end of March. ... read full story / add a comment

Cartoons have become explosive, underlining deep political fault lines in the new world order and more often than not, concealing bigotry and diverting debate from racism and imperialism to the much abused concept of “freedom of expression”. The latest episode was started by a cartoon published in Ha’aretz in which the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Minister of Defence Ehud Barak, say farewell to troops on the way to bomb Iran, while asking them to bomb the UNESCO offices in Ramallah on the way back. ... read full story / add a comment
