international / racism & migration related issues / other press Wednesday August 27, 2014 19:14 by Bobby
Since August 25th, 2014, after reports in the mainstream media that the migration office rejected the applications for asylum of 108 refugees, there have been preparations for the eviction of these refugees, who occupied the Oranienplatz in Kreuzberg in the past (and were evicted in early April 2014) but later signed contracts with the Senate of Berlin, which promised them among others places to stay for at least six months and a single case examination of each of their asylum applications. It is known that parts of the agreements mentioned in the contract have been broken already in the beginning, e.g. that some refugees got their applications rejected without the promised single case examination and have been threatened with deportation already before the six months’ period was over. So yesterday the Senate sent officials to the respective refugees to inform them about the rejection of their applications and to order them to immediately leave their homes read full story / add a comment

The Mayo Advertiser carried an article on fracking on Aug 22nd. See below.

Mayo needs to wake up to the reality that the controversial method of extracting natural gas from rock — known as fracking — could soon become a major issue in the county.

That is according to two local Sinn Féin representatives who this week urged the public and political representatives to call on the Government to make its position on fracking clear because a number of Mayo townlands in the Swinford and Charlestown areas have long been flagged as possible fracking sites. read full story / add a comment

Too often in these complex times we get just one side of geopolitical events. And a hugely oversimplified colouring book US version depicting who we are supposed to hate and who we are supposed to align with along with emotive reasons for doing so such as "humanitarian aid" or "bringing democracy" or "preventing a massacre by an evil regime" or "weapons of mass destruction" etc etc. A captive media carries this simplistic and cynical message into every home until we are repeating it to each other in the pubs, during coffee breaks at work and on internet chat fora, twitter and facebook. Rarely do we get to hear the alternative to this manufactured consent and cynical propaganda from the other side. So here it is, the truth behind what is going on in Ukraine from Russian adviser to Putin, Sergei Glaziev read full story / add a comment

The WSM have produced an article that puts in context the way the Palestinian land has been stolen from them by the Israeli state.

For the size of its population Ireland has seen very large Gaza solidarity demonstrations. It is also one of the few places in the world outside the USA where there has been public displays of support for the Israeli military assault. Internationally there are many variations of this map where activists present to their population what the expulsion of the Palestinians from much of the land they once occupied would look like in a local context. One of our members prepared this but we soon realised its an impossible image to post without some reflection on our own settler colonialist past. read full story / add a comment

The Intercept -the website setup by Glenn Greenwald and others this week publishes a new summary of intercept capabilities used by the NSA and Britain's GCHQ, this time covering how the intelligence agencies working on behalf of the surveillance state disrupt public discourse on the Internet and seek to control the Internet.

The revelations cover a range of surveillance tools that are used to spy and collect information and as well as to disrupt individuals computers and to attack websites using the very same tools that the same state has imprisoned hackers for. read full story / add a comment

The recent ebola outbreak is unprecedented yet little is being said about it in the media and little in the way of resources are being allocated to it's containment compared to what is being spent for example, in stoking up war in the middle east and Ukraine. Partially fuelled, no doubt, by US and Saudi money and weapons supplied for the fight in Syria, ISIS, a branch of Al Qaeda has routed the Iraqi military in a series of offences across the country, taking control of significant parts of the country. These are the exact same people fighting for freedom and democracy with US and Saudi backing just across the border in Syria. The staggering cynicism of US policy in the middle east and the blatant doublespeak of their media is laid bare by these recent events in Iraq in the last few days. Paul Craig Roberts was an insider in the US government for years so he knows how things really work and what the real motivations and driving forces are for geopolitical actions on the world stage. Don't believe the propaganda guff from your TV news. In this article Paul lays bare in simple terms what's actually going on in Ukraine, with Russia, the G7 and the US, and he lays bare the lies propagated about the role of the US in the second world war and the deliberately sidelined but crucial role of 27 million russians who sacrificed their very lives to defeat Nazi Germany, versus only 450,000 US soldiers read full story / add a comment

Emergency situation in Calais!

All squats and camps will be evicted in the next few days!

In the course of the next few days, three camps will be destroyed by the police. More than 600 people live in these camps, which were won through constant migrant struggle after a long series of evictions. No solution has been proposed for the evicted migrants. Moreover, a social center and two further squats are up for eviction starting on May 30th. All told, more than 800 people will be put on to the street. read full story / add a comment

Recent research has found a link between the use of the Monsanto weed-killer Roundup which is used with all GM crops. It is used because the genetic material added to GM crops makes them resistant to Roundup. Normally any crop sprayed with too much weed killer not only kills the weeds but begins to kill the crop. The use of GM crops allows you to spray even more of the stuff.

Residues of Roundup has to be on and in the plants and this is where the research picks this up. read full story / add a comment
