Black History Month Symposium

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Wednesday September 28, 2011 20:37author by Joe Moore - Cork Anti Racism Networkauthor email mapuche at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

Cork Anti Racism Network presents Black History Month Symposium, Saturday 15th October, 2011, in the Boole No.2 Lecture Theatre, UCC, from 10.30am to 4.00pm. All welcome.

The significant role played by Africa and her people in world civilization has been omitted or distorted in most history books.

In an ideal world, Black History Month would not be necessary because the political and educational establishments would fully recognise and appreciate the contribution of black people throughout history. Sadly that is not the case.

The black community uses Black History Month as an opportunity to share with the world its vast contributions, demonstrates pride in its creativity, respect for its intellectual prowess and celebrate its cultural identity which is far too often ignored or misrepresented in the mainstream.

This year for the first time in Cork, Irish based African grass roots activists will celebrate Black History Month. The seminar remains true to the ideals of the founders of Black History Month and will not provide a platform for members of political parties that operate the direct provision and deportation systems.

The event is open to all people, black and white, who support the principles of Black History Month.

Programme.

The day's events will be facilitated by Nura Hagi, Theresa Obi and Naomi Ejeye.

10.30-11.00 Registration/ Welcome.

11.00-12.00 "Africa-A view from the Diaspora" Luke Kasuwanga, Anti Racism Campaigner.

12.00-13.00 "Civil War in Somalia-A Woman's Perspective" Ifrah Ahmed, Woman's Rights Activist.

No Platform to be given to any party which operates the direct provision or deportation systems - I am wondering how this is connected to Black History Month?
