DUBLIN FILM QLUB SEASON SIX:
FUNCTIONAL FAMILIES
......................................................................................................................
LGBTQ people have been defining 'family' in alternative ways since the beginning of human history. Circles of caring friends, mentors into gay culture, support groups, social networks, organically grown mixtures of biological and vocational relatives... LGBTQ people thrive in the mutually-supportive families
they enrich and build. It is time we celebrate our imaginative, courageous, loving families. Our functional families.

Welcome to the revolution.
Antonia’s Line is the mature realisation of the utopian dreams of the flower-power generation, filtered through feminist and socialist aspirations.
The protagonist is a middle-aged woman returning home, to a tiny, sleepy, backward village in the middle of nowhere. As the film progresses, her family grows, organically and gracefully, to include children, friends, a handful of decent neighbours, and a part-time lover.
Antonia invents a new social formation, a non-traditional family that embraces genetics and chance, queer and straight, lost and found, bright and dim, book-fans and muck-fans, locals and strangers. They are bound by mutual support, and by respect to each individual’s needs, whatever they may be.
Antonia’s Line is a living workshop on how to create a wonderfully queer, functional family. So now ─go and grow your own.
