Add as comments This page contains information on updated websites, new issues of journals and newspapers, videos available on the net etc. It is being published on a trial basis this week, and will remain high on the newswire as a "sticky" article. Please add your information here. Include direct links if you have them, or details on where the print publication is available, if not. This is not a normal newswire page and has different editorial rules. It will stay at the top of the wire no matter how many stories are published in the meantime. It is also designed as a pointer to other sites, so please do not (a) post full articles, or (b) add comments that don't consist of information on new content in the paper/website/whatever. This means that comments on who did what to whom, which party got more votes, what you think of a particular author or article, whose hamster was eaten by Freddie Starr , or anything else, will be hidden. If you are upset by an article linked to, you can add a comment or an (original and more-than-a-single-line) article as a standard newswire story. This is a page for links and updates only. The normal practice of hiding links to sites that are racist, discriminatory etc. will be followed. |

The peace group followed Veterans for Peace marchers, some of whom wore bits of old military uniforms, one wearing a huge papier-mache image of a brown-skinned woman in a headscarf and peace sign earrings, carrying a baby. Banners included sayings like "These colors don't run the world" (with US flag), "End the Occupation" and "Support Sanity" with Israeli and Palestinian flags, and many peace quotes from Martin Luther King's writings and speeches.
The mostly Black crowd along the parade route reponded with enthusiasm to the signs carried by the peace marchers, including a painted banner of Saint MLK with a halo, and a satiric picture of George W. Bush with a mushroom cloud rising from his empty skull and the words "Depleted Cranium: America's WMD." A tape of one of King's Anti-Vietnam War speeches played as the peace marchers danced, drummed, chanted and waved peace signs to the crowd.
King's words and the crowd's reaction were a reminder that the poor and the un-privileged know they have the most to lose from war and occupation. The San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice recognizes this inequity by targeting anti-military-leafleting to schools in Black and Latino neighborhoods, and will be featuring Hispanic peace activist Fernando Suarez, father of a son killed in Iraq, at an upcoming event on Jan. 19. See http://www.sdcpj.org for details.
this site presents news on the "sans papiers" movements in France with specific regard for information to Italian solidarity groups. It is not the "site" of the "sans papiers" movement but rather is fed by and moved by those miriadly diverse groups that make up that movement.
And is closely linked to the Italian based movement for the development of European Citizen's rights.
So that the reader might contemplate Socio-cultural transformations of gender and sexuality in the modern Middle East, with particular attention to how these transformations are inter-articulated with conceptualizations of modernity and secularism in the French, German and Spanish States.

on the Palestine Hotel Shooting of two journalists by soldiers of the USA during the Iraqi War.
Reporters Without Borders called yesterday for the reopening of the enquiry into who was really responsible for the US Army's "criminal negligence" in shooting at the Palestine Hotel in Baghdad on 8 April 2003 and causing the death of two journalists - Ukrainian cameramen Taras Protsyuk (of Reuters news agency) and Spaniard José Couso (of the Spanish TV station Telecinco TV5). [Mr Couso was the son of the former secretary general of the IU party, "united left" which is the main marxist formation in Spain, in Catalonia being permanently pacted with the Green party and presently part of the tripartite government].
The call came in a report of the press freedom organisation's own in-depth investigation of the incident, which gathered evidence from journalists in the hotel at the time, from others "embedded" with US Army units and from the US military soldiers and officers directly involved.
The report said US officials at first lied about what happened and then, in an official statement four months later, exonerated the US Army from any mistake or error of judgement. The report provides only some of the truth about the incident, which needs to be further investigated to establish exactly who was responsible.
Pentagon spokespersons said right from the start that an M1 Abrams tank opened fire on the hotel in legitimate self-defence in response to "enemy fire" coming from the hotel or the area around it. This line was maintained and emphasised at the highest official level in the days that followed.
Sgt. Shawn Gibson, the 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) tank gunner who fired the fatal shot, and his immediate superior, Capt. Philip Wolford, who authorised it, denied they had fired because of shooting from the hotel. They said the 4-64 Armor Company of the 3ID's 2nd Brigade, which was stationed on the Al-Jumhuriya Bridge soon after US troops entered Baghdad, was in fact seeking to neutralise an Iraqi "spotter" monitoring and reporting on US military activity. Some of this data caused the US Army to change its line slightly in its official report released on 12 August 2003. It did not speak of direct shooting but of an "enemy hunter/killer team" which required a response in legitimate self-defence. This too was a lie - by omission.

Declaration of Independence from the War in Vietnam
Delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr April 1967 At Manhattan's
Riverside Church
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0115-13.htm
After the French were defeated it looked as if independence and land reform would come again through the Geneva agreements. But instead there came the United States, determined that Ho should not unify the temporarily divided nation, and the peasants watc hed again as we supported one of the most vicious modern dictators, our chosen man, Premier Diem. The peasants watched and cringed as Diem ruthlessly routed out all opposition, supported their extortionist landlords and refused even to discuss reunificatio n with the North. The peasants watched as all this was presided over by U.S. influence and then by increasing numbers of U.S. troops who came to help quell the insurgency that Diem's methods had aroused. When Diem was overthrown they may have been happy, but the long line of military dictatorships seemed to offer no real change, especially in terms of their need for land and peace.
The only change came from America as we increased our troop commitments in support of governments which were singularly corrupt, inept and without popular support. All the while, the people read our leaflets and received regular promises of peace and democracy, and land reform. Now they languish under our bombs and consider us, not their fellow Vietnamese, the real enemy. They move sadly and apathetically as we herd them off the land of their fathers into concentration camps where minimal social needs are rarely met. They know they must move or be destroyed by our bombs. So they go.
They watch as we poison their water, as we kill a million acres of their crops. They must weep as the bulldozers destroy their precious trees. They wander into the hospitals, with at least 20 casualties from American firepower for each Viet Cong-inflicted injury. So far we may have killed a million of them, mostly children.
What do the peasants think as we ally ourselves with the landlords and as we refuse to put any action into our many words concerning land reform? What do they think as we test out our latest weapons on them, just as the Germans tested out new medic ine and new tortures in the concentration camps of Europe? Where are the roots of the independent Vietnam we claim to be building?
Beijing has fulfilled its commitment by cancelling 31 African countries' debts totalling US $1.27 billion.
During the second China-Africa trade summit held this week in Ethiopia, China said it would provide enhanced support for Africa, without any political discrimination. Both African and Chinese delegates agreed that there was vast potential for growth in trade between China and Africa, and that this was vital for Africa's development. Chinese and African leaders vowed to build stronger political and economic ties to counter western dominance in world affairs and improve the standing of poor countries.

Outer Ring Road Protest
found at
http://www.liffey-i.com/
OUTER Ring Road campaigners delivered 1,500 submissions to an Bord Pleanála on January 9, Friday last. The date was designated for final submissions on an Environmental Impact Statement on a short section of the road in the Lucan area.
An Bord Pleanála gave planning permission for most of the road to be developed; but asked for an EIS on the section from Balgaddy roundabout to Woodies interchange, before delivering a decision on it.
Traffic projections in the EIS suggest a traffic increase of some 11 times the present volume, within 15 years, if the road is widened as proposed by the County Council.
Locals said roads are already trafficked enough without drawing more traffic onto a new distributor road running parallel to the M50.
Protestors hope to see the Planning Appeals Board open a public hearing into the plan where they could expand their case.
Details are available on the Council site http://www.sdcc.ie or at http://www.iol.ie/~geof/outer_ring_road_part_two.htm

New issue on anti-Iraq War and anti-FTAA demonstrations.
BAD SUBJECTS
Issue 65
PROTEST CULTURES
In the wake of the past year's widespread demonstrations against the Iraq War and economic globalization policies, the Protest Cultures issue of Bad Subjects begins the new year by examining the role of demonstrations and cultural protest in creating and sustaining opposition to militarism, neo-liberalism, and suppression of domestic dissent. Issue contributors from six countries write on socialism and peace protests; protest and neo-liberal human rights ideology; strategies and ethics of street protest; media representations of protesters; the anti-FTAA demonstrations in Miami; political organization emerging from protests; and the architectures, languages, art and dances of protest.

A short film inspired by crimethinc.'s 'Days of War, Nights of Love' Chapter 'L is for Love' - 'Join the Resistance, Fall in Love' The film was made possible by a grant from the from the City of Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs.
Greetings IMCistas!
My name is Franklin López and I am filmmaker based in Atlanta GA. I just completed a short film using the text from 'Days of War, Nights of Love' Chapter 'L is for Love' - 'Join the Resistance, Fall in Love'
I am pretty happy with the results and hope you are too. You can find a copy of the film here.http://submediatv.com/
or the direct link is http://submediatv.com/fall_in_love/JTR_mp4.mov
It's a pretty hefty download (116mb - yikes) but I am trying different compressions to make it smaller and retain most of the quality.
You will need quicktime 6 to see it - http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Soon I will have a DVD translated into several languages and I plan to place the entire DVD file on my site for people to to download and burn at will. I plan to make a few hundred copies to help pay for my next film based on a different chapter from 'Days...' I am undecided as to which one yet.
I also plan to screen the film in as many places as possible, maybe y'all can recommend a few willing screening rooms across the world. Did I mention the city of Atlanta gave me money to make this film, haha, I don't think they saw it coming but that's another story.
Anywho, feel free to contact me with feedback etc.
cheers
Frank

Brought to you by many of the same people who operate and contribute to ZNET, this is a new independent media site. Unlike indymedia, all contributors are paid for their journalism which aims to be fair and accurate beyond anything the corporate media will produce.
They do not accept advertising so they are reliant on donations from people who believe this is a worthwhile service. It is of course, Non Profit.
