I'd like to see one of these gobshites threaten someone face-to-face every once in a while. At least they wouldn't look like absolute cowards that way.

These people are quick to make threats at a safe distance. When it comes to a face to face encounter they are not so brave or if they do try it on they end up face down in the gutter.

A lot of the blame for this sort of thing belongs with the "mainstream" racists of FF, FG and PDs. They are giving cover to violent racists with their anti immigrant rhetoric.

Nothing noble & right in human history was ever achieved easy. Those threats are disgusting, all made of course from the cowardly guise behind a telephone line.

I hope you reported them to the police.

.. bringing a Garda complaint for harassment, threats and menace of actual bodily harm against person unknown - this is a criminal matter and they are obliged to investigate it urgently - the call path is logged automatically and even the voice is most probably already recorded somewhere in the dungeons of Eircom - you just need to react rapidly to secure them as part of a criminal investigation.

The goon who made it is most probably stupid enough to do so from the comfort of his own home, he can thus quite easily be located, dragged into the public spotlight and made a very fine example of.

You will get damages and your costs for any case against him and it will certainly discourage other cowards from emulating such dispicable behaviour. The resultant adverse publicity against such foul racists should only help boost your campaign.

Also, get a recording device attached to your own phone and use it as a matter of course in the future.

In any case, keep up the good work, you know you are making an impact when your enemies start getting this desperate!

You are going to take a public stance on somthing.You better be prepared for the idiots of dissenting views to take potshots at you.It is now how you handle it.Do you pack it in and avoid the hassle?Continue and ignore this and just accept it as part of the game.Or do you just become abit more careful about your personal security?
As usual i would say just be abit more alert and ignore those calls.Anyone stupid enough to ring up somone they are going to assault is just gobbing off.A pro will hit you and you will never see it coming.
BTW I think even the biggest idiots of the Left/Right crank callers will now know to use a pay as you go mobile and to change the nr pretty regulary.So trying to trace the call is impossible.But you could have alot of fun with these idiots.[sort of like posting on Indymedia ].
Try;getting a air powerd fog horn,whistle and letting it go when they are getting into their rant.
Pretending you cant hear them properly and telling them to speak up.
tap the mouthpiece continously and then say
somthing like "control this is the caller,initate immediate nr trace".[might give them a few days unease.

People are very worried that our way of life will be changed forever by an influx of foreigners. I don't condone waht happened to Orla but I believe there must be something done to stop any more foreigners taking up residnece in Ireland - that's what the Irish people want.

ANSWER: Even then the id of the mobile is recorded. All that changes with pay as you go is the billing.

Orla should initiate a criminal investigation into this for the reasons that BlackPope outlined.

Foreigners who work here need permits and visa's...30 thousand last year..so they are here to work and pay taxes and the numbers are monitored..

Well done, Orla - and keep up the good work! You've obviously upset some local racists. Our local neo-nazi here in Cork - one Brian Wallace - seems to have left the country and the little group around him (all very odd people) has completely collapsed. He was confronted whenever he tried to distribute his nazi propaganda and clearly decided enough was enough - and left.

That said, the most dangerous threat to the civil rights of immigrants, in my opinion, is not from oddballs such as Wallace, but from conservatives with direct access to power, i.e. Fianna Failers, PDers, and so on. The danger we face is the possible 'mainstreaming' of racism. There is plenty of racism in Irish society (it hasn't been imported by the BNP and others) and these prejudices will be sustained and perhaps extended by the forthcoming referendum.

Noel O'Flynn TD (Fianna Fail) and Joe O'Callaghan (ex-Labour and now Fine Gael) got substantial votes in the last general election in Cork precisely because they played the race card. These people are a far greater danger than the likes of Brian Wallace (though, I think it is clear that nazis SHOULD be confronted and faced down on the streets, but while always remembering that the real danger already lurks in the corridors of power).

Thanks for the solidarity guys. The meeting went well, no trouble. A local election candidate, from Nigeria, running for Galway City Council, recently received a threatening letter (the postmark was Dublin). She has gone to the police and I am going in tomorrow. (They have already been contacted by phone).

The Irish Sun newspaper ran a piece on the threats to both of us this Friday (2nd April). A local paper is also going to cover it and Foinse (Irish language paper) and I was on Radio na Gaeltachta on Thursday morning.

About the second call, he was in the middle of saying 'nigger lover' before I cut him off. How is this going to be an insult to an anti-racist? Obviously the N word is ofensive, but people who say this seem to think the person will be upset if it is alleged that they have friends who are black. It is so ridiculous.

I think the whole incident just shows what is at stake with the referendum, though. I think we could really beat this if enough people come out against it.

Frankly, I think immigration control has nothing to do with racism. People who are concerned about immigration are not automatically racist bigots. These people are concerned at a large influx of people into the state (many with families) and the impact this will have on housing, health services and law and order.

I am 100% in favour of strict immigration controls into Ireland.

That is not true. I think immigration controls are racist, and they are used in a racist manner by governments, but I would not go around calling someone who thinks there is a need for some immigration control racist. We are trying to oppose what we think is wrong. As for pro-immigration control policies I don't know where anyone could get the idea that the pro-control side are finding it hard to get their voice heard. They have the government and a some of the major media on side. I think this is bit like the cry against the 'liberal media' in the US, where people are (for the most part) in reality getting various shades of right-wing, but when it seen as not quite right-wing enough by some they cry out about the 'liberal media'.

It has everything to do with it, which is why you find the anti-racist opposing controls (to varying degrees), and racist supporting them. I saw a shocking documentary on the Austalian immigration policy on TG4 a few years ago. I have this documentary on tape and will dig it out and have a look at it again.

Yes I agree, but that does not mean that someone like myself can't argue against their fears and point out some of the false basis on which they are based.

What large influx? - this is a myth. Also we need a certain amount of workers from abroad to keep the economy ticking over. In fact I am concerned that we (in the EU) are not letting enough in to counter-balance the ageing population in Europe.

Law and order! This is an ironic comment considering this thread started with a threat to me from a white Irish person.

As for the rest, you should know that the problems in the health and housing sectors are to do with bad policy and lack of funding. The health service is depending on foreign workers, and besides the manpower issue I think it is a very positive thing to have people from different backgrounds working together in a sector like health. They bring different ideas together and maybe come up with new solutions.

As far as I understood the word would mean that I as an irish person would think I am superior to any other race? Isnt that inherient in any race of people,that they think they are superior to any other?
You say that the pro immagration control crowd have the media or the politicans on their side?Taking the Devils Advocate side here they would say it is the exact opposite!considering anytime immagration control tries to hold a meeting AFA&Co show up and use storm trooper tactics to shut it down.Which is played in the media as an extreme right wing party.Maybe for ireland,but quite liberal to some in europe.This is i think where alot of the no chance to discuss this is coming from.INMHO this is actually going to make it worse,you disallow one side to put their point of view across,it will be suppressed and you will have a more virulent form show up.See Germany and the resurgence in Neo nazism.
Another thing maybe folks are worried about is the non mixing of cultures;example muslims in europe and this hijab debate.
It is a FACT that this is a big problem in countries like France,Germany,the UK,etc that has brought in large foreginer pouplations.there is tension and limited interaction of the cultures.So maybe this is what people are worried about,we dont seem to learn from others mistakes?

As far as I am concerned the more the merrier here.I would rather be served,treated talked to,talked with and generally interact with foreginers here than my own Irish brethern. they do a better job,are more corteous,friendlier,intelligent and have less of a chip on their shoulder than us Irish.
Maybe they could run and govern us better then our own fools in the Dail.
