Belfast Solidarity with Pat O'Donnell, Shell To Sea

Solidarity action in Belfast (as well as London) shows continuing support of the Shell to Sea Campaign against the exploitation of public fossil fuel resources and the arrests of citizens in Rossport, West Ireland.

In Belfast, on Saturday the 27th of March, the planning meeting of the Irish Climate Camp, took time out to express solidarity with the Shell to Sea campaign, and Pat O'Donnell in particular.

We took our Shell to Sea banner for an impromtu take-over march through the streets of Belfast. Outside the office of the North-South Council we handed out flyers about Pat O'Donnell to the passers by, and spoke to journalists.

"We believe that personal commitment against goverenment and corporate oppression needs to be defended," said John Wright, "Both North and South need to embrace renewables and move away from reliance upon transnational corporations and the car-carbon-fossil fuels culture."

Earlier, demonstrators had met with an official of the Irish Office, to ensure that they were aware of the forthcoming demonstration and it's issues.

This issue strikes a chord with the people of Northern Ireland who have felt the oppression of the state in recent history. Belfast and the north of Ireland need to know more about what happens in their own island. Over the years I've talked to many in the North, who speak wistfully of the " Free State ". If only they knew.
