Lismullen Woods

category meath | environment | opinion/analysis author Thursday July 29, 2010 14:12author by Farrelly57 - Private Report this post to the editors

Littering our woods

Here is a small wood, made smaller by the M3 Motorway and used obviously as a tip by locals now.

Lismullen Woods.
A visit to Lismullen Woods last week proved the myth that modern country people are stewards of the land they live on.
Here is a small wood, made smaller by the M3 Motorway and used obviously as a tip by locals now. As no one is demanding they stop none of the local, vocal and often ranting Meath politician have weighed in so there are no headlines in the local papers about local people being denied the right to do as they wish.
Here though is proof that when locals are left to their own devices they do as they wish.
In Meath wrath its still aimed at those who try to protect and conserve such places.
Rath Lugh Woods on the other hand looks wonderful.
It is still fenced off and thank God for that; the fence should be kept in place.
The Rath was heavenly that same day, full of birdsong, re-growth, sunshafts, badger diggings, butterflies etc. It just lacked the results of mindless human activity.
People who care and love nature will always find a way to slip into it and enjoy it but the fence means that the shotgun men, the quad bikers, the “leave the rubbish bag people” and their political support staff have given it a miss.
This could be anywhere in Meath now.
When leadership becomes perverted our land will be misused, when people stand up to them or sanction human activity there is a chance for sanity, sustainability and pride!
That is the message of this post.
A royal county or a royal mess; its up to us.

I was there yesterday and was distressed to find also that after going to the trouble of planting young trees along the river bank, heaps of concrete blocks and rubble along with a couple of traffic cones have been dumped by the culvert under Lismullin Bridge. Add that to the list when writing letters

If you get a reply let us know. I wrote loads of letters to Meath Co Co about dumping and about pollution in the River Gabhra but they never answered any of them. It was cleaned up eventually but it took months.

I think that land may be owned by Opus Dei, who have a major centre very near there. Have you tried contacting them?

Hi Richard,

As far as we know, Lismullin Woods are owned by Coillte but there were rumours that Rath Lugh is owned by the Nra, hmmmmn. And to Bruscar- yes an acknowledgement of the complaint has been recieved. I also sent in a complaint about the pollution in the Gabhra, mostly dumped construction materials back in 2008 and it wasnt acknowledged then so this is an improvement. We will continue to monitor the Tara Skryne Valley. Thanks.

These photos were taken at a critical point in the Valley where someone has put forward an application for planning permission for a private residence, domestic garage, proprietary waste water treatment system and percolation area, proposed landscaping and all ancillary site works.

To give you an idea of where it is located, with Tara Na Rí behind you, proceed to Blundelstown Interchange. Just before you get to the first Roundabout take the little slip road on the left which will bring you to the spot. You wont believe how near Lismullin it is and if it gets approved will set a precedence on the other farm access roads. Can you imagine another big house overlooking the Henge, then more? Not in this sensitive area! Have they learned anything at all?

BTW the application dosn't display a ref number on it so when lodging an objection it would be worth mentioning it. There are only two weeks left in order to make an objection.

Well done and I hope many people object.
It may be that the man making the application is one of the people making submissions against the Tara/Skryne Landscape Plan.
He may also have a plan of his own, worked out with his cronies to build, build, build.
I cant imagine that it will remain a one -off house, here or on other slip roads in the valley.

It's worse than earlier reports. This is a text recieved from Lou out scouting yesterday evening:

"So to confirm, 5 between Rath Lugh and Lismullin, 2 at roundabout Soldier's Hill where we saw a pair of Golden Eagles today! 1 at Tara na Rí pub and worst; Wills Bros applying for waste disposal on Mc Carthy's land at Tara na Rí. Also 1 at sewerage treatment plant past Tara Golf Club".

I will get photos and other info by weekend. What do ye think of this?

Hi all,

I am just in from Tara after going there to get photos of the planning application at Blundlestown. The reason we couldnt find it on the Meath Co Co website is because it is the old sign that has been there since 2008 when the application for a waste disposal facility was refused. Just as well the person with the camera phone wasnt able to send me the pics cos I like to check things out for myself anyway. Obviously Lou was just doing the driving as if she had gotten out of the car herself she would have actually read the thing I'm sure. It wasnt John either btw as he just passed on the message from the Vigil.

John has been busy seeking advise from a Solicitor and from An Taisce about our objections. They both concurred that we would be seen as nuisance objectors as the applicants are operating within the law and we are not neighbours who are beeing inconvenienced in any way. However they both felt we had a strong case against a waste disposal facility at Blundlestown and housing on the farm acces roads. So with BlundERStown sorted we have just the farm access rds to be concerned about and each can make up their minds on whether that is important enough to object to. Myself and John are the only two people who have lodged objections so far.

What needs to be done is to highlight how one off housing is suburbanising our rural countryside and to try to bring about a change in the planning laws. Other than that we can keep highlighting unusual activity such as the amount of planning applications within the Valley currently before Meath Co Co.

Many thanks to John Farrelly for the legal advice, very very much appreciated.

Carmel
