Solidarity Protest in Dublin for the Egyptian people

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Saturday January 29, 2011 03:18author by TD - Free Palestine Campaign Report this post to the editors

"We are all Egyptian"

Yesterday, on the fourth and most violent day of protests in Egypt against Mubarak's 30-year iron fist rule in which at least 20 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured, Ireland's Egyptian community along with people with live conscience from other Muslim countries, activists from the Irish group Act for Palestine and the Irish Anti-War Movement vented their outrage at the ongoing murderous repression of their countrymen outside the Egyptian Embassy in Clyde Road, Ballsbridge.
egypt1a.jpg

No room in the inn for democracy, concern or empathy for what was happening outside this establishment as the embassy staff sought refuge behind closed doors and window curtains filming the protest from a chink between the curtains for its duration. Cheered and dismayed in turn at the latest updates coming in via Twitter and Al Jazeera the mood of the protesters swung wildly but what was not in doubt was their rock solid solidarity with their fellow countrymen and their desire to see Mubarak join another tyrant in Saudi Arabia exile, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Egyptian protester 44 seconds into the second YouTube video: "We will not be silenced ... whether you are a Christian, a Muslim, or an atheist, you will demand your godamm rights and we will have our rights one way or the other".

More than 50 people were killed yesterday in Egypt, 23 in Alexandria alone, many were "riddled" with bullets, some with faces blackened, crushed and unrecognizable, according to latest Al Jazeera (english) reports from the morgues. There is huge anger and rage, from the families who have lost loved ones. There have also been reports and images of people shot by metal pellets from shot guns. At present on the streets, it seems the police have stepped down and the army are protecting buildings of interest (embessies, government buildings, banks), but, the army are reported to be on the side of the people against the "common enemy". The army are asking people to not gather in the streets, but people are paying no heed. If things heat up again today, as they are very likely to do, who knows what way it will go. There seems to be a very large level of support of the army, whereas little or none for the police.

The main headquarters of the ruling National Democratic Party was burned to the ground last night when 10`s of thousands broke the cerfew, along with many police armoured vehicles, cars and barricades in the streets. The internet was nearly totally shut down by the state (97% in 1 day), to stop facebook and twitter being used as a chief organisation tool for protests. This is an unprecedented move. Also yesterday, to add fuel to the fire, wikileaks released further cables related to Egypt. Mobile phone networks were shut down, thereby making it very hard for people to coordinate.

Does anyone else think the Elbaradei is just a US stooge? It's only in the western media that he is being touted as a future president. In Egypt, it appears that only the rent-a-mob who greeted him at the airport even know where he is.

second that.

I heard him interviewed on the World Service early sat morning. All about stabilising and returning to 'normality'. To be fair to the BBC they also interviewed an activist from street level who exposed the reality.

Dr ElBaradei has said too many things in the past that the US administration would be uncomfortable with. On October 4, 2009, the Xinhua News Agency quoted him saying : 'Israel is the number one threat to the Middle East given the nuclear arms it possesses. '

The Republican fascistic Tea Party element now riding high in the US Congress won’t have forgotten his words from 2007: "you do not want to give additional argument to some of the 'new crazies' who want to say let us go and bomb Iran”

He’ll be lucky if he doesn’t get a bullet in his head.

Friday’s appointment of Egypt’s torture and spy chief Omar Suleiman to the vice-presidency is being portrayed in the media as an "act of assurance" to the West . Mubarak takes his orders from the west so the appointment suggests that the West wants and expects repression . Suleiman may be the man they are grooming to take over from Mubarak.

The US and Israel can only really do business with butchers and dictators in the Middle-East –it can’t allow democracy. Who in the region -other than in the apartheid state Israel - would vote for the type of policies America rulers think vital to their interests? America and its allies need the continued occupation of Iraq ,Israeli control over the Palestinians , the theft of the regions oil wealth , control of the Suez canal ,an ally against Iran and Hamas , a black site to torture prisoners in .

If there is a hint of genuine change in Egypt , the democracy contagion would spread to Israel’s strategic ally Jordan .

and al jazeera have an In Depth article that takes more or less your stance , joe. I'm just giving a subjective read of how he came across on air, compared to a report from the street.
I have big respect for Elbareidi and his attempts to navigate the pirhana pool. But I think he's around the same age as Mubarak, so even if he's slipped in as a stopgap, can he contain the festering anger? This thing seems to flaring by the day,Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen,Syria, Lebanon. ...
Saudi next? expect more clamps on al jazeera, a la Cairo. China is blocking blogs. She's gone viral. And all sparked by a vegetable-stall holder resisting the jackboot. Chaos theory and the lepidopteran wingflap gone geospherical.

In a insightful article on Mondoweiss, Virginia Tilley warns: But Suleiman (newly appointed vice-president) and his technocratic allies are already pre-positioned to ensure that the new Egypt precludes any access to real political influence by factions that, in the US view, are ominously closer to Hizbullah in their regional outlook. The whole point of the current drama is indeed to defuse the legitimate mass popular discontent that feeds the appeal of the Muslim Brotherhood—just as Hamas appealed to the disenchanted Palestinian electorate and Hizbullah has appealed to the disenchanted Lebanese electorate, the majority of whom otherwise don’t favour Islamic parties but were driven to support them through terminal political frustration.

Suleiman is the ideal successor for US interests and has clearly been hand-picked now to take the reins ... He’s a core high operator in Israeli/US foreign policy, including the ‘war on terror’ (supervising US-requested renditions, etc.), and a good personal buddy of former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, with whom he once male-bonded in surviving a shared assassination attempt. He’s a proven ally in the deceitful manipulation of the Palestinian Authority: e.g., leading the phoney “unity” talks while supervising Egyptian assistance to the US in training PA armed forces to repress Hamas in the West Bank and ensuring the brutal sealing of Gaza. In Egypt and on the frontline, Robert Fisk is more hopeful than Tilley: Omar Suleiman, Egypt's chief negotiator with Israel, a 75-year-old with years of visits to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and four heart attacks to his credit. How this elderly apparatchik might be expected to deal with the anger and joy of liberation of 80 million Egyptians is beyond imagination. When I told the demonstrators on the tank around me the news of Suleiman's appointment, they burst into laughter.

Their crews, in battledress and smiling and in some cases clapping their hands, made no attempt to wipe off the graffiti that the crowds had spray-painted on their tanks. "Mubarak Out – Get Out", and "Your regime is over, Mubarak" have now been plastered on almost every Egyptian tank on the streets of Cairo. On one of the tanks circling Freedom Square was a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mohamed Beltagi. Earlier, I had walked beside a convoy of tanks near the suburb of Garden City as crowds scrambled on to the machines to hand oranges to the crews, applauding them as Egyptian patriots. However crazed Mubarak's choice of vice-president and his gradual appointment of a powerless new government of cronies, the streets of Cairo proved what the United States and EU leaders have simply failed to grasp. It is over.
