Its two years after the G8 agreed to ‘Make Poverty History’ and yet 1 billion people are still without access to clean water, according to a recent report by the United Nations World Institute for Development. Both Bob Geldof and Bono have both described the situation as “a farce” with Bono even saying “I feel like a fool that I ever believed them”. World poverty and inequality will be a key theme at an upcoming debate between Socialist Youth and the Young PDs, taking place on Saturday the a 21st of July and Galway on the 28th. read full story / add a comment

Blackletter are organising a skills exchange project called '10x10x10', to take place in Autumn 2007 We are looking for proposals from artists or other interested parties who have an interesting or useful skill to share. 10 people will be selected to deliver 10 workshops over 10 weeks. Participants will receive a fee at the equivalent to a part-time lecturing rate for their workshop and preparation time. The republican youth movement Ógra Shinn Féin have launched a new national website. The website is in addition to the growing number of platforms that Ógra have opened up in the past year, including their blogspot, local websites, Glor na nÓg and Spark. As well as keeping activists and supporters updated of daily republican youth news and views, the website will be used to recruit new members, and inform people of upcoming events. read full story / add a comment

On Saturday the 21st and Saturday the 28th of July Socialist Youth will host forums in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick and Galway for young people sick of war, poverty, environmental destruction, low pay, and injustice. There will be debate, discussion, film showings, food and in Limerick it is followed by a youth gig with several great local bands. read full story / add a comment

Surely a pet dog cannot be taken from someone purely because he is a certain breed, especially if he is under proper control and has not done anything wrong. If Dublin City Council can get away with this unfair proposition then what will come next?. This situation must constitute discrimination at the very least. The very idea that DCC are responsible for dogs who bite people on council property is wrong surely?. It was my understanding that owners are responsible for the actions of their pets. If a person falls off a ladder in a Council house are the Council responsible for that too Besides being indiscriminate , this proposition is unenforceable. Where will the dogs be taken to and by whom?. Who will rehome them??? How long will they be kept and where? There is already legislation already in place against dog fighting, if this law was enforced we would not have this problem. read full story / add a comment

This year is the 40th anniversary of the murder of Che Guevara by the CIA in Bolivia. Che was in Bolivia trying to assist the revolution taking place there when he was captured and shot, his last words apparently being “Shoot, coward, you’re going to kill a man”. Che Guevara’s legacy and the struggle for socialism in Latin America today will by discussed at a upcoming forum on the 21st of July in Limerick. Many family pets are at risk of being destroyed following the decision by Dublin City Council to ban all dogs listed under the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991. ANVIL Ireland has condemned this move. Spokesperson, Miriam Anderson stated “this decision appears to have been made in the absence of any informed discussion with rescue or welfare groups. The fact that Dublin City Council has referred to all of these breeds as “dangerous dogs” implies a total lack of understanding of both the breeds in question and the existing legislation”. read full story / add a comment

“Every woman deserves to have her mother in the delivery room with her” I remember reading these words on rollercoaster.ie years ago from a young scared Irish woman due with her first baby. Her heartfelt plea for help…her desperation for ANY suggestion ….of ANY possible way that she could persuade her maternity hospital to make the exception to the rule and allow her mother and husband in with her for the labour and birth. Likewise I remember the replies of other women…women who have gone through it before…women who dripped with cynicism because they too would have liked this choice but knew what her outcome would be. The pain, confusion and fear of that sad, sad post have stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately it looks like very little has changed for women in some areas of Ireland . While many maternity units around the country are receptive of additional birthing partners and Doulas, the Dublin hospitals remain unresponsive. AIMS Ireland has decided to look deeper into this issue. read full story / add a comment |
