Since its inception early this year the Belfast branch of WSM continues to go from strength to strength, growing in size and establishing new contacts. At the moment we distribute a 1000 copies of the Ulster edition of Workers Solidarity to homes across Belfast and at political events. We hope to expand our current distribution in the coming months. WSM members continue to take part in the current campaign against the water charges. We have attended and helped to organise pickets in solidarity with fellow workers on struggle in the midst of the current neo-liberal offensive and attacks on our living conditions and workers rights by the neo-colonial administration at Stormont. read full story / add a comment

Despite all odds, with scrambled radio and jammed phones courtesy of dirty tricks, a seasick passenger, in rough waves with a storm brewing, the small boats, the SS Free Gaza and the SS Liberty, successfully landed in Gaza early yesterday evening, breaking the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip. They left Cyprus on Thursday morning, sailing over 350 kilometers through choppy seas. They made the journey despite threats that the Israeli government would use force to stop them. They continued sailing although they lost almost all communications and navigation systems due to outside jamming by some unknown party. They arrived in Gaza to the cheers and joyful tears of hundreds of Palestinians who came out to the beaches to welcome them. read full story / add a comment

The participants of the 20th Ecotopia international environmentalist gathering at Sarikum nature reserve, Sinop, on the Turkish Black Sea coast, are awaiting and preparing for forceful eviction of their campsite by the Jandarma (Turkish Police), which are already present with undercover agents and several cars. The 70 participants from over 30 countries will peacefully resist this unjustified raid. The offical reason for the announced eviction was the announcement of the intention to take part in the weekly permitted press conference of the local anti-nuclear initiative SİNYAD (Sinop Nükleersiz Kent ve Yaşam Derneği read full story / add a comment

A number of protesters have been arrested in Mayo resisting Shell contractors who have been trying to install pipeline infrastructure on Glengad beach. Five people were reportedly arrested this morning and another three this afternoon. It is unclear whether all those arrested have been charged under the Public Order Act or have simply been detained. Shell has been working on the beach, which is a Special Area of Conservation, under a foreshore licence granted by Minister Mary Coughlan and permissions from Minister Eamon Ryan, even though they have yet to receive planning permission for the onshore section of their proposed pipeline. read full story / add a comment

You have to hand it to those tireless activists over at British National Party HQ in the land of the brave and the home of the free (England, for the unitiated in imperialist propaganda). The intrepid campaigners for racial purity have been so busy churning out their ‘information’ on “immigration invasion” that they simply haven’t had the time to verify the appropriateness of some of the images they’ve been using on their website. In an August 4 article entitled Spot the Difference: Zimbabwe or the EU?, far-right readers are confronted with a prominent image of a No to Lisbon leaflet (carried here for those who don't wish to boost the ratings of Britain's super xenophobes) recently published by none other than an Irish socialist-republican party, éirígí. read full story / add a comment

As Tibet solidarity and other human rights activists are rounded up i Beijing, a designated protest pen is transformed into a trap from where people disappear (77 applications were made to enter this "protest pen" - all have been withdrawn, suspended or rejected!), a Chinese girl is ditched from the Olympic Opening Ceremony for not having "the look" to go with the voice, the Party promotes, the corporates profit and prima don athletes are expected to keep a housebroken silence - one's mind is cast back to an iconic image from Mexico '68. read full story / add a comment

At present there are 50 plus mobile phone masts on top of the Northside Swimming Pool in Coolock. I find it's sad that we have got to the stage without anybody lifting a finger. I am not living in the area at the moment, but appeal to anybody from Coolock who reads this, and thinks it is an outrage, to make a commitment to do something about it. Phone, write, make a leaflet, tell friends and family and let's try and get a public meeting on the go. read full story / add a comment

More the decks of a Noah's ark than a cobblestoned trading emporium, Free Palestine Campaign activists took to rain deluged Shop Street last Saturday in solidarity with the brave women and men who presently will be sailing from Cyprus in two boats to break the medieval siege of Gaza and on what Nobel Peace Laureate, Mairead Maguire, calls a "pilgrimage of justice and peace." read full story / add a comment

During the next 2 weeks, the Solitaire (the biggest pipe laying ship in the world) is set to begin illegally constructing the offshore section of the pipeline. It is believed that the Solitaire is on a pretty tight schedule & booked up for the next 2 years, so ANY disruption provides us with a real opportunity to delay the project significantly. read full story / add a comment

Amadeu Casellas is a well known anarchist prisoner. Amadeu spent already 25 years in jail, in fact he's the most veteran prisoner in Catalonia. He joined many collective protests, hunger strikes, rebellions, etc and suffered many tortures and reprisals as a direct consequence of his permanent confrontational attitude towards the system. Now Amadeu thinks that it's time to be released, but the prison authorities don't want to release him, so he decided to take a step forward again and started an indefinite hunger strike. Amadeu said that the only options are freedom or death. He's already at the sickbay of Quatre Camins prison and his health is going worse everyday. read full story / add a comment |
