About the event…

The series of earthquakes ( http://lasc.ie/blog/after-the-quake/ ) that hit Mexico during the month of September took approximately 500 lives and destroyed buildings across vast areas of the country. The magnitude-8.1 quake that hit on September 7th was the largest in Mexico’s history, and left around 100 dead in Oaxaca and Chiapas, the poorest states in the country. Despite significant national and international relief efforts, reports continue to emerge of aid being diverted or failing to reach those most in need in the south of the country.

Due to the physical destruction wrought by the earthquake, Oaxaca’s globally renowned FilmFest was left without a home. But rather than cancel the event, organisers decided to take the festival on the road – founding Oaxaca Sin Fronteras (Oaxaca Without Borders) https://www.oaxacafilmfest.com/tour-oaxaca-sin-fronteras Building support for affected communities throughout Oaxaca, the festival has toured the states affected by the earthquake, other regions of Mexico, and even other countries – including locations as diverse as Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Kolkata, Madrid and Buenos Aires.

Now the call for solidarity with Oaxaca has been answered in Ireland. In the aftermath of the earthquake, a group of Mexican migrants established Ladxido’be (Zapotec for ‘heart’) to raise funds for community-based organisations involved in the reconstruction efforts in Oaxaca.

“Our desire is to be ambassadors for Mexican culture here in Ireland, and to act in solidarity with those suffering from the effects of this terrible earthquake”Ladxido’be member Karla Zavala

Ladxido’be have joined with the Latin America Solidarity Centre to organise the Dublin iteration of Oaxaca FilmFest. The event will take place on Thursday, December 7th at Filmbase in Temple Bar, from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. Entry to the event is free, but donations to aid community-level reconstruction efforts in Oaxaca are encouraged. The evening will include a short informative video about the effects of the earthquake on Oaxaca
