Mary Kelly's Trial Going Well

category clare | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday July 02, 2003 18:55author by Vinnie Report this post to the editors

I just received the following report from someone attending Mary Kelly's trial in Kilrush today where she is being tried for for her attempt to disarm US military aircraft at Shannon airport.

Ramsey Clarke was in the chair this morning on Mary's behalf and so also was Michael Bermingham who has come back from Iraq especially to testify in the trial and was in Baghdad throughout the war.

Mary's defense also put in to show John Pilgers documentary, and footage Michael Bermingham has brought back from Iraq.

The overall impression seems to be that the trial is going quite well and that the defense is a really good.

Both sides have submitted their closing arguments, the defence argument is said to have been brilliant. The court has returned from lunch for the Judge to give legal directions to the jury which will then retire to deliberate on it's verdict.
Will post an update if I hear more today

the news from kilrush: Mary has been found guilty on the trespass charge but the verdict on the criminal damage was a hung jury so there will have to be a re-trial.
