Indymedia Ireland - out of the net and onto the streets
dublin |
summit mobilisations |
feature
Tuesday March 09, 2004 00:03 by Indymedia Ireland Editorial Group - Indymedia Ireland
Come to a meeting on Saturday next (March 13th) and get involved with two new projects: the establishment of the Independent Media Support Group, and a proposed Indymedia centre for Mayday '04. Last week two major steps were taken in the development of Indymedia in Ireland. These steps were prompted by two major events coming up in Ireland in the next few months, the accession of the 10 new EU members on May 1st during Ireland's EU presidency and the visit of George Bush to Ireland on June 25th for a US-EU summit. These events present a great challenge and a great opportunity for Indymedia. We can be sure that a large number of people from all over the world will come to Indymedia to find out what's really happening behind the facade of the corporate and state propaganda machines.
Step 1: Formal constitution of the Independent Media Support Group - IrelandIndymedia Ireland has thus far been financed in an ad-hoc manner, with a small number of individuals putting their hands in their pockets to pay the bills. We have also had the problem that, beyond an occasional real-world public meeting, there have been limited opportunities for people to get involved in Indymedia who don't have regular Internet access and Indymedia has always aimed to be much more than a website. We have produced videos, a large collection of news photography, printable PDF collections of news highlights and many other offerings, but the website is still the only thing that ties them together. In light of our desire to broaden the focus of Indymedia, away from an exclusively web-based medium, and in particular our aim to establish a physical Indymedia centre in Dublin, a group of Indymedia editors have formally established the Independent Media Support Group (IMSG), an association of those who wish to support the development of independent media in Ireland. The IMSG has the following aims and principles.
The constitution of the IMSG is available to download as a PDF file. The establishment of the IMSG does not alter in any way the operations of the Indymedia site, which is an autonomous project run by the Indymedia editorial group. There is no requirement for the members of this project, or any other Indymedia project, to be members of the IMSG. Step 2: Establishment of a physical Indymedia Centre in Dublin for Mayday. The second major development is the plan to establish a physical Indymedia centre in Dublin for the period around Mayday. This centre will host Another View of Europe - a week of screenings, exhibitions and workshops from the European Independent Media network. This event will include a photography exhibition, a selection of some of the best offerings from Indymedia film makers around Europe and a series of practical workshops where we will offer assistance to people in line with one of our key principles, the concept of 'Be the Media'. To this end a number of workshops will be delivered on film and video editing, the use of Internet distribution methods, creating and filing reports and using the web as a tool for social activism. One of the highlights of the week of events will be the showing of a documentary about Madrid's Mayday in 2003. This is an award-winning film that examines the struggle of redundant Sintel workers, who marched from 6 different points of Spain to arrive in Madrid on May 1 2003 to take part in the Mayday mobilisations there. This film will be shown in conjunction with a major Irish trade union. A major theme of the week of events will be Independent media from the accession countries. We are currently collecting content from the Eastern European Indymedia network for our photo exhibition and video screenings. The Indymedia centre will also be used as a dispatch centre for reporting the events of the Mayday weekend in Dublin. This will involve the setting up of a computer network for the rapid deployment of news and multi-media reports from the streets of Dublin to the global Indymedia network. A team from Indymedia UK will be travelling to Ireland to lend us their experience of setting up such a centre. The events will be concentrated on a venue in the city centre, whose location of will be confirmed shortly. This venue will act as a dedicated Indymedia space for the week around Mayday. However, there will also be events at several other locations over the week, including a workshop at the Convergence Festival in the Cultivate centre and screening in trade union halls. We Need You.In order for these plans to be successful we need people to get involved and help us out. We are holding a public meeting this Saturday, March 13th, at 2pm in the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square Dublin 1. This meeting will consist of a brief introduction to the Independent Media Support Group and a practical planning session for the establishment of a centre for Mayday. We need people to help out in three main areas:
DonationsFinally and inevitably, we need to finance all of this. That means that we are asking people who support the Indymedia project to put their hands in their pockets and give generously. Details of how to donate are as follows. To donate directly to our account: Account Name: Independent Media Support Group To send donations by post: Independent Media Support Group, Please make cheques payable to "Independent Media Support Group".
In the near future we will offer the ability to join the IMSG and make donations through an online form on the website.

.
A good initiative. I think six members being enough to call an extraoadinary GM might cause problems though. Political groups could become too dominant . Shouldn't it be a percentage of the membership?
the IMC centre sounds great
the exhibition is very much needed, communication is the key and i feel we need to explore how we communicate far more-
ive looked into a few spaces @ moore st, as that is the heart of the city.
the more stuff we have on the better
im invovled with comhlaimh and they too have stuff to contribute about development issues- and are talking about adding to the exhibition
this exhibition can also be working in conjunction with ISF2- (irish social forum 2, if it is to be that) which should be @ that time ISF2 should be far more effective than the previous was.
im not saying last was not good, it was great, but the feedback from it has not been too good- its early days
perhaps this exhibition can be a deadline for ISF to present stuff, ideas, groups etc from ISF1
theres also a friend of mine who i have asked if he will put on his exhibition during this time, it is the pangaya exhibition which was shown during the dun laoighre festival of world cultures-
pangaya was the single continent on the earth before the continents drifted apart- so basically were all humans on earth.
doing things to spread awareness of polit issues is v important- so as its not the same old heads
also- it is important to make things as exciting as possible- so as new people have fun and want to get invovled- this is already happening with the much funfilled RTS `s -reclaim the streets- we have had
the example i give is
berlin love parade 1989- 150 people protest FOR tolerance, understanding, respect between nations= wall comes down
love parade 1999- 1.5 million people dance on streets- what an urban event-
dance and have fun while making a political point- simple
i hope we/indymedia can also put on IMC workshops- giving people the skills and confidence to use computers and other tools-
what uk team is coming over, are any of the undercurrents team coming over? hope so
i also hope we use this productive time to think about more ambitios world changing stuff- as thats our work here, yes,
i hope we do do a global network project in conjunction with a future world social forum

- ideally the entire global population should participate in this process- we have to think about how to make that happen
anyway- look forward to seeing you sat
dunk
This event clashes with George Galloway's meeting also at 2 p.m. on today, Saturday 13 March.
Both will lose out on common friends
Indymedia Centre @ mayday time with the exhibition, sounds great
should be excellent time for us/imc-ie to start interacting far more with local groups/ public in general
i think the exhibition(s), events, workshops etc should be used to inform people of imc and to let them know they can be part of it/ use it for their world too
im in favour of the exhib focusing on both the general and the more detailed-
gen- what is imc, where did it begin, how has it progressed, where is it going to (ie- films, imc tv, programs)
detail- what is going on in ireland now with eu etc, using centre as communication space during mayday etc
many will hopefully come to centre to use it as they will anyway,
but hopefully more, those not too familiar or interested in politics or global issues, will come as it is
SOMETHING EXCITING. something participative, evergrowing and open, that allows for their inputs- this will happen if we get out to more people, letting them know of indymedia and letting them know they can be part of it
the building due to its location will be exciting, if its painted outside with a massive mural- this will be exciting. interacting with surroundings, people and places will happen, has to happen.
id like to see us doing the "indymedia news at lunchtime" on moore st every day for the week - april 23- may 2 at 1.30,
a piece of streeet theatre, that as an event or focal point combined with small flyers letting people know of centre, along with some PRINTFLARES being both distributed and posted on walls.
the news can be a focal point for all interested groups- to submit to imc what "news" they want told (of course they can be the newstellers if they want). a big cardboard box that fits 2 people, with a window and indymedia news written nicely on it, should simply suffice)
the imc-promo list has been dead for 2 years, this list was there for promoting imc to new groups
perhaps that in itself tells the story........
we need to communicate more
bottom line is this:
the world is changing for the better
new systems, new processes, new groups are coming into being
the dual open processes together of "social forum and indymedia" can and are starting to change things:
more people are communicating togheter about how this world is being run, who is suffering and what can be done to change things
it is exciting- it brings meaning to life- its fun, open, everchanging, participative
you meet and DO things with new and exciting people
images below are all about indymedia spreading awareness and getting more people involved
