Spectre of Guantanamo Stalks US Ambassador in Galway

category galway | anti-war / imperialism | feature author Friday March 26, 2004 22:10author by Galway Grassrooter Report this post to the editors

One Person Arrested

From the newswire [3:06pm Fri Mar 26th 2004]:

UPDATE: arrested person has been released

"One person has been arrested in the past hour while protesting against the US Ambassadors visit to NUI, Galway. He is being held in Mill St Garda Station on some bogus charge, so anyone in the vicinity, please come down & show your support.

orange jumpsuits kneel outside Galway restaurant window to protest US ambassador

The visit began this morning in the main quad, where the Bush appointed US Ambassador, James Kenny, was to meet with local whigs. It appeared as though the whole morning shift from Mill St. was in attendance, along with a number of Special Branch & various assorted Spooks in Suits. Banners were grabbed and a few scuffles took place, as they tried to smuggle the publicity-shy Ambassador in through a back entrance.

From there it was on to a planned ‘meet & greet’ with selected American students, which was held in Moffets café, one side of which was conveniently made of glass. This gave Kenny a pretty good view of the thirty or so people present. Some of them were dressed in orange jump suits, shackled & kneeling. Others brandished Palestinian flags and other banners people had cobbled together on the morning of the protest. The poor old Ambassador had to strain to hear what students were saying above the shouts from outside, bangs on the window, whistling, drumming & the Tibetan horn someone had fortuitously brought along.

The arrest was made, as Kenny emerged from the quad after lunch, by a couple of over enthusiastic cops who were extremely heavy handed in their approach. A number of people tried to stop the cop vans, one of which contained our arrested friend, from leaving but they were also dragged out of the way & threatened with arrest."

Must have been some demo. No mention of it in Irish Times, Independent or RTE web-sites. Is that best you can do. By the way, do clowns that do these demos ever have jobs they go to? Or, just sponging off taxpayers?

The person above wrote: "Must have been some demo. No mention of it in Irish Times, Independent or RTE web-sites."

That's right, you read it here first on indymedia.ie.

And then followed up their drivel with this mean-spirited comment: "Is that best you can do. By the way, do clowns that do these demos ever have jobs they go to? Or, just sponging off taxpayers?"

If RTE and the Indo are so great why do you have to get this news from indymedia.ie? Perhaps because our reader/writers report news without the intervention of "professional" journalists and their editors (people groomed and selected by the big businesses that employ them to tell their slanted stories).

Finally when you talk about "the clowns that do these demos [...] sponging off taxpayers" are you referring to the politicians or the Gardai that should be out looking for farmers and publicans evading their taxes?

Read indymedia as I like a good laugh. So, Vincent Browne, Fintan O'Toole and Robert Fisk are hand-picked by big business to tell their slanted stories? Pull the other one.

Man arrested at anti-war demonstration
March 26, 2004
(16:35) One person was arrested today during an anti-war protest in NUI Galway.

The demonstrators were protesting during a visit by the US Ambassador.

The man arrested was later released.

I like a good laugh myself. Mostly I get it from people like yourself "John". People that make funny arguments along the lines of "You say that the media is biased but I can pick out a couple of exceptions and therefore the media is not biased". Clever. Very.

Keep reading indymedia.ie You'll find more detailed, accurate and plentiful coverage of subjects that are misrepresented, hidden and spun in the mainstream media.

Notice the extra information in the indymedia.ie report from "Galway Grassroots" and the paucity of detail in the RTE report.

The reason for the paucity of detail is that the demo was a non-event. I've seen bigger crowds at the opening of a telephone box. Bye for now. Just off to have a burger and diet coke at McDonalds.

John dont insult your own intelligence by basing your judgement of events on that reported in the media.

when forced away from the cop car i was actually threatened with assault. I thought the gard (special branch or senior officer?) was going a bit overboard in his handling of me so i said "are you assaulting me?" (funny thing to ask in retrospect) to which he replied "i'll assault you if i have to, you hear me, i'll assault you if i have to". i just replied calmly, "that's unlawful, you don't scare me."

Good on yiz! Keep it up.
As for 'John', how does he expect the Irish Times or Irish Independent to have covered it in yesterdays edition? I'm sure they will mention it in todays editions. I wonder what slant they will put on it, maybe they will present it as a riot. Don't see any sign of the wombles in those photos though, perhaps they were in disguise.
Again, good vibes.

the bloody ambassadors in town!

BTW, this guy Kenny is a Chicago construction company president with no previous diplomatic experience. He took the position over from Richard Egan, another wealthy Massachusetts computer company mogul. One would wonder how they got these cushy jobs untill you find out that Kenny was Bush's top fundraiser for illinois. He recently raised 3.6million USD for Bush's campaign, including a 27,000 donation from Kenny Construction. Just sponging off taxpayers John? Damn right they are.

What do you think you're actually gonna accomplish by annoying and bothering the ambassador? Do you really think he's gonna go back to his office and call the president and be like "well Mr. President there were 30 or so people making noise outside my meeting with wierd instruments......I know Mr. President I understand, but they were really loud.....maybe we should change all our policies to fit the needs of these fanatics who follow me around and shout things .........What's that Mr. President, I know they only represent hardly a fraction of the population, but they were really loud and almost dented my BMW........Mr. President remember those riots and demonstrations where a million people didn't even change a damn thing politically? Ya but this was 30 whole people!!! I mean someone really could have lost a shoe or something. Okay Mr. President I understand."

So next time you think about being lazy and protesting america, think about this........we'll promise never to come to your country and take out all our products and domestically exported economical goods and services. Hell we'll even promise to never have our military on your foreign soil. Wait a minute.....if we had never done that in the first place all of western europe would be speaking German right now! So think twice before biting the hand that feeds you.......by which I mean America.

These idiots represent nobody in Ireland. I would put their support in the general population as under 0.0001%.

Whenmost Irish people see these dirtbags with their stupid stunts they just point and laugh.

They're a bunch of clowns.

I can assure you that America and President Bush have the wholehearted support of just about everybody in Ireland - apart from this tiny band of idiots.

The US stepped into the war when they were attacked by Japan in 1941. Secondly, the war in Europe was far from over when the Yanks arrived in Europe. In fact, the Battle of the Bulge was a close run thing and without American support Nazism could well have triumphed in Europe.

Without an attack from the West, the Russians would have gotten nowhere near Berlin.

I know it's highly fashionable to be Anti-American nowadays but you really need to do your research rather than peddling secondhand views from internet crackpots.

thanks for putting things straight. have too admit i don't know enough about the second world war. just posting some food for thought. First i should say that i'm not anti-american. sure i satarised america wid di kkk in di middle. that doesn't make me anti-american. I'm just not into flags or governments much for that matter. i mean amerika is a country that was founded on genocide just like australia where i come from. and of course america has a whole history of slavery which i why i put in the kkk. australia too was founded on the back of slavery (not african obviously). it is also true that japan was provoked into attacking pearl harbour. hilter also would not have got very far without the help of the ford corporation who supplied military vehicles. there is a whole host of connections between nazi germany and USA.... if you care to look into it. not saying that USA is nazi. more that USA is capitalist and does whats in it's interest and not whats in the planets interest. USA has had a shocking history of foreign policy and is the most militant nation on earth not to mention the one with the most weapons of mass destruction. ain't nothing wrong with the links i posted - all the information can be verified over and over again if you care to research. dreseden was bombed after germany was a threat.
