VOICE launch public 'VOTE' on Waste

category national | environment | press release author Wednesday May 12, 2004 18:19author by Will St. Leger - VOICEauthor email info at downtozero dot ie Report this post to the editors

Voice Of Irish Concern for the Environment (VOICE) have launched a national ‘voting' campaign called ‘ Down to Zero' . The campaign calls on the Government to reject incineration and provide maximum recycling and composting for household and commercial waste.

VOICE will ask the public to sign Down to Zero postcards at high street ‘polling stations' or vote online at http://www.downtozero.ie

Signatories ask the Government to reject incineration because of the threat to human health and the environment. The ‘votes' will be delivered to the Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen.

Celebrity Chef Seamus O'Connell was in Dublin city centre to cast his ‘vote' at the first Down to Zero ‘polling station' .

VOICE says they are engaging the public with positive waste solutions because government is failing to tackle waste in a sustainable way.

VOICE spokesperson Will St. Leger said “A Forfás study showed that 97% of Irish people would recycle more if were made easier. Instead of providing our homes with recycling and composting bins the Government gave us incineration spin; we're asking people to cast their vote on waste”

What's there position on Bin Tax?

I can't see how any environmentalist can support parties that favour the bin tax. The bin tax will harm the environment as it will see wast collection and disposal being put into the hands of dodgy gangster privateers and will give an incentive for illegal dumping.

A true environmentalist would support a publically owned waste collection service that would provide for full recycling facilities. Also a a true environmentalists would favour the real polluters to be punished, tax should be levied on the packaging companies, super markets, and big business NOT the ordinary householder who produces a miniscule amount of waste.
