Speaking at the event, John Tierney, Campaigns Director, AOHS, said: ““Animal rights organisations intend making animal rights an election issue in the 2007 general election.”

“It is time for our legislators to deal with the issue of bloodsports for once and for all. They must carry out the wishes of their electors who do not wish to have our wildlife abused and killed for entertainment.”

According to Mr. Tierney there is a marked increase in bloodsports activities during the festive season.

He claims that hunting with hounds is brutal activity. It exists solely for the pleasure and entertainment for those with a twisted attitude towards animals.

John Tierney went on to say: “Politicians running for office in the 2007 election will be told in no uncertain terms that they will find no support from the animal rights community if they fail to take on board our concerns about the treatment of animals”,

Gardai reported no problems with the event which ended after the hunt and riders left the town for the day’s hunting.

Protests were also held in Co. Meath and Co. Dublin with large anti-hunting banners hung up on the side of the roads where local hunts were meeting.
