Jump To Comment: 2 1SIB allows for GM- it fits into the whole EU/FDA food industry and capitalism issue that was
the reason for the inception of such things as 'Indymedia' and anti 'G8'. Food/nuclear/core
energy issues are all part of the EU/US capitalist programme and the Greens are part of it
but their backround in conscience and nimbyism gives the insidious and graded introduction
a more - intelligent- basis. Bertie Ahern signed the Irish Nation into the globalised mess.
Other counries are resisting it, but the Irish love to be 'part of the gang' and will roll over
to be tickled once the media present the issue ina meaningful way. Big corporations work
through absorbtion and they only had to pet the Greens and give them a little ministerial box
to get them 'onside'- great is it not?
The phrase genetic modification, has the greatest potential in agriculture is an understatement that needs to be clarified. This can only mean the greatest potential for disaster. Currently the farms on the Island of Ireland are simply being asset stripped by the big fix that is out there.
The aspects that need to be considered on the GM Issue are as I understand them to be
1. Is the technology safe, what are the risks? And are the proponents of this technology dependent on it for their salaries.
2. What is involved in the fundamental manipulation of nature by GM and where does it end
3. If the Island of Ireland embraces the GM route what are the consequences.
On the first issue of safety, the technology is not safe and should GM crops be grown in Ireland then the situation would not be reversible as the stuff could never be recalled. As this technology operates at molecular level, having been put together by atomic structures from underneath of which we have little or no knowledge other than awareness there are bound to be unpredictable consequences. As living creatures we must ask ourselves what affect the insertion of genetics from another species would have on the life forms of the species that would be modified.
Then there is the double standards where you enter a country say like Australia and heavy fines or imprisonment are imposed for bringing any plants, fruit or vegetables as these could have some affect on the environment, yet it’s ok to grow something that never existed on the planet before as far as we know. Then there is the insulting literature from Government departments pertaining to bio security.
On the second point we have arrived where we are today by an evolutionary process and the genetics have unknown viruses sealed by nature and therefore dormant, that is until the GM manipulation takes place where it is suspected that recombination could cause these viruses to become active in another species creating a novel virus and the attendant consequences. Ultimately it is envisaged that humans will be modified and pity help those of us that are not.
On the final point, if Ireland goes down the GM route in farming that will be the end of Irish farming as we know it and as most farms have been inherited our ancestor’s contribution will disappear as well. We must simply understand that we cannot compete with countries that have a much better climate than ours, in some cases boasting two crops a year for our one. If we go down the GM route our produce will only attract commodity status, therefore we must differentiate our product sales advantage by keeping GM out of Ireland.
Finally I hope the Green Party will do its bit to get Ireland GM free status or have the balls to make a stand on the issue as we seem to be on a death path with no viable answers other than more efficient means of destruction.
