Dismay at Blair's new appointment

IPSC dismay at Blair's new appointment
3rd July 2007

In common with friends of Palestine throughout the world, the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) greets with dismay the news that Tony Blair has been appointed as the so-called International Quartet's Representative to the Middle East.

The IPSC notes US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's claim that the former British Prime Minister "has been at the forefront of international efforts to promote peace and reconciliation around the world". Given Mr Blair's role in instigating the illegal war against Iraq, his refusal to call for a ceasefire during last year's Israeli onslaught on Lebanon, and the fact that he has sent British troops into war five times during his decade in power, this claim stretches the boundaries of parody.

Many will point to Mr Blair's role in securing the Good Friday Agreement that has brought a tentative peace to the North of Ireland. However, he has consistently backed Israel's policy of internment without trial, its disproportionate and illegal violence, and its insistence that it will negotiate only with those who have already conceded its demands. Had these criteria been applied on this island, the conflict would never had ended. This double standard suggests a neo-colonial and indeed racist attitude towards the Palestinian people.

The IPSC believes that Tony Blair – already a patron of Israel's Jewish National Fund (JNF) - is committed to the aims of the expansionist Israeli state, and hence is the last person to represent a body that is supposedly dedicated to seeking a peaceful resolution of the Israel/Palestine issue. The credibility of the "International Quartet", already at a low ebb, has vanished completely with this absurd and misconceived appointment.

Dear Indy,

First anybody can become a Moslem by standing in front of the appropriate Moslem court and reciting the Shehada - the declaration of faith. I have seen at least twice these two years smiling Afro - Carribean faces tell BBC cameras full frontal that integration is simple - just all come into Islam....

There might be hostility to particular Moslems, they are people and some individuals are become nasty, some are born nasty and some have nastiness thrust upon them, whatever the stripe; and to Islam and Moslems in general which is an ideological set up that it is legitimate to disagree with in various degrees; but there is no such thing as "racist anti Moslem" though there might be some racist ill feeling that happens to coincide with the fact that a person of a certain colour happens to be a Moslem. The whole idea of race is 19th century clumsy and it is safer to keep to something not genetic after the late centuries' events and mistakes. Discrimination is discrimination - but then it is not so easy to shout. Try recitative.

By the way: when the Zionists accepted the 1921 Cairo partition of Palestine into Palestine and Jordan, and the Peel partition scheme 1937; and then the UN 181 partition scheme in 1947 they were acccepting in reality and by implication that the Palestine Arabs had a right to establish an Arab state in Palestine homologous with their own Zionist project. The tragedy is that the then Arab, apology for leadership, instead of pouncing on the half loaf like a practical political operator, stood hoity toity on their dignityy and refused 181 in the slogan, "The Palestinians will never submit to partition! " Then they failed to establish any sort of government of Palestine when they did have the West Bank of Jordan, and the Gaza Strip under Egyptian military occupation.

Sorry one interlude: on 15th September '48 (Why 15th??) Arafart's uncle, the Mufti Haj Amin el Husseini declared a Government of All Palestine in Gaza which survived as a brassplate on a door till 1958 or '59 when Nasser exiled them to Beirut .

The Palestine problem is that the price of a PalestineState is to recognise the Jewish self determination of Israel (and vice versa) and the Arab parties have been remarkably infexible and unsubtle qua nationalists; and a total failure as practical administrators - after all Sinn Fein established The Republic in spite of British presence, as did Israel. If Ireland is entitled to be independent of Britain; and Pakistan to be independent of India; then Israel is equally entitled to be independent of the Arab World - and its brilliant political successes.

Full support and recognition for the IPSC statement regarding the astonishing developmet that has put Tony Blair in the position of Middle East Envoy.
What next? It seems clear that we are currently witnessing the attempted global destruction of Democracy and Civilisation by the committed Axis of Evil - UK, US, Israel. Employing an astonishing array of violence and propaganda against the Arab countries of the Middle East. It would appear that their intention is the normalisation of military bombardment of Arab States in the minds of our young adult population. Blairs new portfolio? - make this sickening military campaign stick in the western mindset!

METHODS OF TORTURE USED.

* deprivation for over 24 hours (15 cases);

* "Dry" beatings (17 cases);

* Painful tightening of handcuffs, sometimes while cutting off blood flow (5 cases);

* Sudden pulling of the body while causing pain in the hand joints which are cuffed to the chair (6 cases);

* Sudden tilting of the head sideways or backwards (8 cases);

* "frog" crouch (forcing the detainees to crouch on tiptoes) accompanied by shoving (3 cases);

* The "banana" position - bending the back of the interrogee in an arch while he is seated on a backless chair (5 cases).

Frank you are typical of many so called supporters of Israel who in reality are rascist anti muslims.

Firstly you mention Ron Arod - he was an Israeli TWO who was captured after a military operation in 1986 and who is classified as MIA- along with thousands of others POW's and MIA's from countless wars - MIA status is common and unfortunate but a part of war. He was captured In Lebanon and then "sold" to Iran by the Amal resistance movement - nothing to do with Palestinians. It is reported he is dead - killed by the Iranians. This is a war crime indeed but again nothing to do with Palestinians - indeed recently there was a major diplomatic row between israel and Egypt when it was reported that Israel forces murdered over 200 Egyptian solders in the 1967 war - a war crime- however it was diffused when israel admitted the killings but pointed out that those killed were in fact Palestinians fighting on the Egyptian side and thus not POW's - strange logic!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly you maintain
"Hamas and PLO complain about their prisoners who are living in Red Cross inspected quarters on adequate food and recreation and receiving family visits, letters and phone calls"- This is blatantly untrue, thousands of Palestinians are held without charge or trial, denied family visits and are held incommunicado this has and continues to he highlighted by the UN special rappanteur, torture os also used on a regular basis in these prisons.

Thirdly you mention

" Do read the PLO and Hamas Charters; and let us know whether Israel signing a contract with these... clerical fascists, because they hold Israel should NOT exist, makes any sort of sense?"

The PLO are a secular organisation and have in the past specifically modified their charterd and have recognised Israel. Please tell me when and where Israel has recognised the right of Palestinians to live in peace and security.

Israel signed upto the Roadmap for Peace and continue to break their committments around settlement building etc

Frank get your facts right and stop hiding you anti-muslim beleifs behind so called support for Israel

Dear Sir,
There is always a gallows irony about those who complain of Israel.
They insist on Arab rights to "resistance" alias wage war on her, then complain that she keeps prisoners of war! Hamas and PLO complain about their prisoners who are living in Red Cross inspected quarters on adequate food and recreation and receiving family visits, letters and phone calls; but where is Ron Arad; and the other six missing Israelis who have never been Red Cross visited let alone allowed letters, let alone phone calls?
Really odd is the ISPC grouch that Israel will not talk with those who do not concede its right to be itself! Do read the PLO and Hamas Charters; and let us know whether Israel signing a contract with these... clerical fascists, because they hold Israel should NOT exist, makes any sort of sense? Here is an interesting moral question disentangling the bad faith of the proposed dummy contract, from the perfect honesty of the Arabs who have no intention of keeping it?!
Yours faithfully, Frank Adam
