Why hasn't that truck driver been arrested for dangerous driving?
There are currently two different groups on the building site and another two groups of blockaders at Gate 1 and Gate 2.
The protester whose foot was driven over has been taken to hospital. Guards were reported as being very rough while removing people from the road at Gate 2 - standing on people's arms and chests and pulling them off the road by their necks. Local, John Monaghan had his camera pulled off him and thrown into the ditch by gardai.
any reports on turnout is O'Rielly there?
The truck has since got past the blockade of Gate 2 (leaving it blocked for just over an hour). 30/40 local people were actively involved in the blockade. Guards reported as violently dragging people away - punching people in back and stomach. Many guards reported as not wearing their identification numbers.
The blockaders have now joined the group at the main gate to the site and there is a line of gardai (now including the public order unit) between them and the compound gate. Two other arrests have been confirmed aside from the protester blockading Gate 2. Further details on these two arrests to be confirmed.
One group of about 20 protesters on the site attempted to get past the inner gate (with spikes on top) to the site but suffered minor injuries (cut hands) as well as ripped and torn clothing as the site security prevented them from getting across by pushing them back against the spikes at the top of the gate. Two of the people who succeeded in getting to the inner site were ejected from the site by site security needed first aid but are now on their way up to join the group on the road by the main gate.
You've proven your point. Your actions further alienate you from the general public despite what your 'surveys/polls' say. Pack up. You've fought your battle but you will not win the war. The project is too far gone and too important to the State for stop it. Lessons can be learned by all to ensure this is not repeated but in this case the legal framework is with the developers and not the protesters no matter what way you want to look at it or spin it.
Do I smell coffee brewing............time to wake up.
"Shell scared to bring in more trucks. Protestors win the morning at the expense of a serious injury."
So Shell's cops are at it again and the anonymous pro-Shell posters are up to their usual tricks to try and undermine S2S. It won't work lads.
Well done to all involved. I know that any violence will once again be perpetrated by the state.
we can expect the usual censorship from RTE and Irish Independent.
You are not alone - the world is watching.
Six people have been escorted out of the compound after breaching it via a back entrance. The group managed to breach the inner perimeter and stop work temporarily. There were minor scuffles but security were 'generally nice'.
Of course the truck that ran over the protester's foot had nothing to do with shell and was not even entering the site.
3 Poeple are beignheld in Belmullet Garda station on public order offences.
The Individual who's foot was run over by the truck has sustained serious broken bones.
The protest has wound up a fiar bit wiht people congregated near the main gate and horsebox.
well done to the gardai and shell workers, lets hope he dosent put his foot under a truck again! Go Home!
Nice to see Indymedia Ireland has Trolls as well.
Keep up the fine work S2S.
A new ten-minute film will be up in several places in the next few days concerning the policing and the pollution. I'll post links as soon as the film is online, been a long time in the making.
Hope the injured are okay and the arrested are released.
OB
I hope the person who was injured has a record of the truck.
Was it reported to the gardai?
Did the driver leave the scene?
The driver was well aware of the possible consequences of driving through a crowd.
He should be charged with dangerous driving.
Have the gardai launched an investigation into the matter?
If the gardaí refuse to prosecute then a civil suit should be made against the driver.
Let a jury decide.
When its 'lorry versus person' the lorry wins on the road but the person wins in court.
shell can't be trusted anywhere plain and simple!
Heres the link for those who wish to watch it,Paddy you should enjoy it.
Not a bad report, show the Gradai being veyr heavy handed as always.
http://www.rte.ie/news/2007/1109/corrib.html
Not bad - the coverage on RTE - it was the first time i heard about the 'great gas giveaway' and 'the irish people receiving nothing' - well done caoimhe - fair play to one and all - keep up the good work - when the public starts to turn on the government - either it being the current farce with the HSE or pay rises for TD's - the media won't lose out on ratings. So maybe RTE is turning on our Fianna Failed F**k ups!
Shell chun ifreann!
16 people are currently on site. There are security present but no gardai as of yet. The group is a mix of locals and supporters.
"Security guards assaulting protesters, grabbing cameras, work continuing"
I just want to note a rather curious thing. There seems to be a lot of vitriol reserved for Shell and how supporting Shell is treason and about it being a rape of our resources etc etc.
But isn't the whole Shell To Sea campaign about moving the terminal offshore, i.e. "We seek to ensure the proposed Corrib gas terminal and pipeline are constructed offshore, as is best practice".
The vitriol as you put it is reserved for supporting Shell in its current plans for the project,ie the online terminal at Bellanaboy and the ridculous terms granted it by the Iirsh Government over the resources it is to process.
S2S isnt against the process of the gas, what it is against is the processs taking place in the proposed location and the current terms upon which Shell is financially benefiting on a massive scale compared with a miniscule return to the Irish people.
16 protesters have now been escorted off the site. Reports have come in of a fence being thrown on a woman's leg and a local man was carried off the site when he stopped to say a prayer.
3 local protestors from Dublin town land interviewed on six one. and 3 local protestors from the following local town lands in erris Tuam ,Cork, Belfast.
RTE choose who to interview and what interviews to use and which not to use.
How do you know that there wasnt 3 locals interviewed this morning?
Irrespective of that, this is a national campaign and everyone has a right to comment on it.
The people who travel down to Rossport regularly have just as much right to comment if requested to do so by a reporter as anyone else, its a national issue as well as a local one.
That’s how the rest of the country see s2s protestors now.
it comes as no shock to me that somebody got ran over today. who is in charge down there, is any health and safety or are ye just hell bent on causing trouble. roads are for cars and trucks no people. As much as i support your idea and i would love to protest i wont, until that mindless thug element is gone fromt the site. That person should be charged for endangering traffic, the driver was only doing what he is paid to do, drive. Trucks hurt when they hit you, so stay away or somebody will ne killed, or maybe thats what the thug element of the protestors want!?
"Charged for endangering traffic."
:O)
Here's a chap who should be making law. Imagine all the potholes that we could get fixed etc.
On a more serious note, I watched and listened to the RTE stuff given in links above and still the fuckers are using spin. "clashes;" you'd be given the impression of something like a scene out of Braveheart. How can there be clashes when the 'clashees' are fucking sitting down?
RTE should beware of using slander. It's afterall unlawful to 'clash' with the Gardaí.
'Clashees' who take offence at being criminalised by RTE ought to contact them and demand a retraction and an apology (first step in a civil suit?).
Well done to all, only one broken foot sure thats ok isnt it.
Do you lot not think that running out in front of a truck is ok? I mean this guy that got injured is he mentally challenged? Theres a thing called a duty of care you might want to get accustom to the phrase.
So on a good note i personally would like to tell you all the progress on the site is reported to be brilliant, the structural steel is flyng up, good weather is apparently helping enormously.
I propose what we should do in tandem with your next so called day of action we should have a truck drivers rally on the bellanboy road after all it worked for one of you.
