The Labour party suffers from a psychosis of not having any ideas of its own from later then 1890. The Conservative Party psychosis is the compulsion to 'dish the Whigs'. That's English politics, says Prof James Alexander.

Re-think the Recession

category international | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Monday April 13, 2009 22:47author by Philip O' Rourkeauthor email phish20007 at hotmail dot comauthor address 6 ridgewood avenue Report this post to the editors

Is the Recession Real or is it just in peoples heads?

My view on the world and all its moaning about the financial diffuculties we apparently face now. Its a total farce and it is the media putting negative thoughts into our heads, and I for one i'm not that easily swayed.

Probably the most over-used word of the decade. Recession, recession, rescession. If evybody got a penny for saying it there would be no recession at all. But maybe there isn't. Okay some people have lost their jobs, and the banks are in a mess but yet people are going out more, and in my view spending more.

Maybe its a fear factor but more people are buying lotto tickets. Now correct me if i'm wrong but if I was struggling to make ends meet I would be cutting out on expenses like the lotto and scratch cards. Yet more people are gambling. I walk into a bookmakers and I see 8-10 people standing around placing bets. I would of thought that in these bad economical times that people would be trying to keep those pennies in their pockets.

The media has jumped on this and taking it way out of control. They, the media, have sent out a negative mind-set to all of us and most have listend and have been scared. Its sort of sad and frighting that the media has so much influence over the people of the world.

Also it seems people are going out more than usual, maybe they are trying to drown their sorrows but still its costs money to have fun. My point is the recession can only effect us if we let it. I think its in peoples heads. I know 2 or 3 people who looked for jobs and got offered 2 or 3 at one time which proves there are jobs out there, and good ones at that. Its a negative mind-frame that have people saying we are 'doomed' but in reality we aren't. So we cant buy that extra bit of clothing on the week-end, or we can only buy 6 pints a night instead of 10. The truth is we are still well off. I know its a bit of a ciche but think of all those people who are starving to death, all those children dying before you decide to use the word 'Recession'. We arn't in a recession. We are just living life a little slower than usual. The brakes have been put on, but you know they can not be kept on forever and soon enough we will be living life at full speed again.

Sorry Philip, your own facts makes your argument redundant. I don't know if you were around in the last recessions, or if you were if you were able to pay attention to what went on, but if you were and did you'd know that gambling was among the first things that increased as the recession bit.

In addition to Philip's comments. I was around in the 80s and went with the recession ,good and not so good times ,at least we could rely on good ol'
England ,yes the same England that we all love to give out about ,

Today is a little different with the work just not there ,the recession is a means to an end and can be used to con the people also , makes the weak
a lot weaker and the stronger into little Hitlers ,the Law being their favourite 'hideout ' and their views second to none which in effect entitles the Bullies
to their Bar-room Barrister speeches about all and sundry , Its a monetary con game with people being used as pawns and statistics at every turn.

And yes it also gives people something to moan about ,a past time which is relished by all and sundry .

Is there people starving today in Ireland ,of course there is , and really that should not happen .

Thanks for the strong economic analysis backed up using firm satistical evidence and not basing your arguments on ancedotal experiences

not width standing the collapse in tax receipts from 42 B to 34B and a budget defecit projected at 10.5% and the jobless rate predicted at 9.25% I think you are spot on

Ireland's billions in oil & gas fields were sold to Shell/Statoil for a tiny amount, by a corrupt politician - now we need to renegotiate that deal to reclaim our heritage, the resources our forebears struggled for.
