Six waste operations, a quarry and powerlines A meeting of local residents at Curraha Hall last week expressed opposition to a proposal to set up a recycling and waste storage facility on a 40-acre site at Crickstown, Co. Meath. (Meath Chronicle 25/4/09, p. 8).
Mayo County Council has granted planning permission to G&N Loftus Recycling and Sons Ltd. for a waste sorting for recycling facility at a former spinning plant at the Asahi site in Killala, Co. Mayo, an application to which Killala Community Council had objected ‘in the strongest possible terms’. (Western People 21/4/09, p.9).
The Cavan County Manager assured a delegation from Cavan Better Waste Management (CBWM) that the 100 acres at Corranure, Co. Cavan owned by Oxigen Environmental Ltd. would not be developed into a landfill after CBWM’s group treasurer Mary McDwyer said the proposed sale of land to Oxigen would result in ‘Cavan town…getting a super dump on its doorstep.’ (Anglo-Celt 23/4/09, p. 5).
Local groups are planning to appeal to An Bord Pleanala against a decision to grant planning permission to Go Recycling, a subsidiary of ONE 51 group, for a waste transfer station between Castleconnell and Montpelier, Co. Limerick. (Limerick Leader 25/4/09, pp. 1,2).
Local residents have appealed to An Bord Pleanala against planning permission granted by Cavan County Council to Wilton Waste Recycling Ltd. for a recycling centre at Bunancory, Virginia, Co. Cavan. (Anglo-Celt 23/4/09, p. 3).
Galway County Council has ordered Kilkenny-based company Land Organics to cease transfer of sludge from Mutton island sewage plant in Galway for spreading on farmland in Eyrecourt, Co. Galway, two years after locals –organised in the East Galway Anti Sewage-Sludge Committee- began a campaign against the practice. (Connacht Tribune 24/4/09, p. 4).
A decision is expected within the next week on a controversial application by Kilsaran Concrete for increased quarrying at Kilmessan, Co. Meath, which has faced strong local opposition expressed in over 100 objections to the application. (Meath Chronicle 25/4/09, p. 11).
North East Pylon Pressure (NEPP) has accused EirGrid of harassing landowners along the preferred route for the north-south electricity interconnector and has contacted local Garda superintendents to inform them of the ‘alarm and distress’ caused –especially to older people- by the unannounced arrival of EirGrid agents. (Meath Weekender 25/4/09, p. 7; Northern Standard 23/4/09, p. 6).
A series of meetings in Co Monaghan last week organised by the Monaghan Anti-Pylon Committee (MAPC) were attended by hundreds of people to reassert opposition to the proposed interconnector powerline through the county. MAPC is to hold a major public meeting on the issue within the next two weeks. (Northern Standard 23/4/09, p. 6).
NEPP held a general public meeting last Wednesday at the Headford Arms Hotel in Kells, Co. Meath, following a meeting in Kells the previous Monday for landowners along EirGrid’s preferred route to advise them on how to deal with approaches from EirGrid representatives. (Meath Chronicle 25/4/09, p. 5).
Residents in the Muff, Corlea and Kilmainhamwood areas expressed their opposition to EirGrid’s proposed powerlines by congregating in significant numbers at the Muff crossroads last Friday. (Anglo-Celt 23/4/09, p. 7).
