Proof that People Power can make a difference! People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith and patients’ families learned today from the HSE in Cherryorchard Hospital that the controversial decision to close the Beech Unit has been reversed. The Beech Unit will remain open for the foreseeable future. This has been the result of a magnificent campaign by the families who care for the patients and the local community However, there will be some beds closing for the summer months and the decision on how many beds and in what units the closures will take place, will not be made until early next week. |

Jump To Comment: 1Earlier to day the Campaign To Save Respite Services in Cherryorchard Hospital issued a statement welcoming the reversal of the decision to close the The Beech Unit. It has now emerged that this decision will now lead to cuts in a number of other respite units in the hospital: Sycamore, Willow and Laurel.
The Campaign is opposed to these cuts and is demanding that respite services be maintained at their current level. To do so would simply require the employment of 7 additional nurses and 5 care assistants at a minimal cost to the HSE.
The Campaign will be holding protests at the HSE Headquarters on Thursday at 12 noon and at Cherryorchard Hospital on Friday at 3pm.
