Only 15% of Israelis support effective two state solution

category international | anti-war / imperialism | other press author Tuesday August 04, 2009 12:05author by David L - IPSC Report this post to the editors

The results of a recent survey in Israel shows a jump in racism and intolerance, particularly among newer Jewish immigrants.

According to a latest poll of Israeli Jews, only 15% support full evacuation from the West Bank, the only thing that could lead to an effective two-state solution. Half oppose any settlement evacuation, ever, a clear majority think that ‘political speech should not be permitted to express harsh criticism of the state of Israel.’ And 53% support ‘encouraging Arabs to emigrate from Israel’, or in other words, ethnic cleansing. Bloody hell.

The full poll is here:

Well David if this survey is accurate then how do you think these views can be changed?

Well, a good starting point would be to put intense external pressure on Israel to end the occupation, this would take the form of restrictions on trade, a freeze on arms sales and so on - let people see that there is a price to be paid for keeping a people under occupation, stealing their land and trying to imprison or kill anyone who gets in the way of the colonisation project. At the moment, the message the Israeli people get from the US and the EU is simple - kill as many Palestinians as you like, do whatever you want, and we will continue trading with you, selling you arms, and sending military and economic aid to sustain the occupation. Slobodan Milosevic would certainly still be in power if Serbia had been rewarded in the same way for his crimes in Bosnia and Kosova.

The report also says;

-74% support “Freedom of expression for everyone, regardless of their opinions.

-30% of the Arabs agree that “only citizens who are loyal to the state are entitled to benefit from civil rights”

-A strong majority of the country believes that all citizens, regardless of creed etc. should have equal rights.

-Most Israelis are prepared to evacuate any settlements within the framework of a permanent agreement

I can pick and choose too.

You also omit the cut and thrust of the report, which was the radical opinions of immigrants to Israel in contrast with the veteran population and why they hold such opinions.

"it is possible that one of the explanations for these findings is that more than half of the immigrants from the FSU live in peripheral settlements in the north and south, which have suffered from an insecure security situation and have lived under considerable threat in recent years. "
