Artist Sabine Springer, based in Kinvara, Co. Galway, is designing a book which will house three Irish-language poems reflecting on personal experiences of Galway city as seen through the poetic lenses of three Irish-language poets. The project was a major winner in the recent Bus Éireann and Foras na Gaeilge-sponsored Irish language project awards. The poets are Seosaimh Ó Guairim, Collette Nic Aodha and Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh. The project will be completed in the next month or so.
"It is hoped that the book can be displayed in Galway," says the Centre's Director, Fred Johnston; "but the animosity shown towards the Centre by Galway City Council's Arts Office is likely to influence any eventual decision. It is a new project and a worthy one and our thanks to Bus Éireann and Foras na Gaeilge. We are delighted to have Sabine on board."
Meanwhile, in response to queries, he has said that the Western Writers' centre website continues to take poetry and prose for publication in Irish, French and English, but emphasises that submissions must be from established or previously-published writers. "There has to be a certain proportionality of achievement. It is unfair to take work that has no proven ability or no track record."
