Sinn Féin activists and T.D's demonstrate at the Fianna Fáil 'Yes to Lisbon' launch. Yesterday, 2 September, a number of Sinn Féin activists and T.D's demonstrated outside the Fianna Fáil 'Yes to Lisbon' campaign launch. Brian Cowen and co. walked from Leinster House to the event, held in the Royal College of Surgeons, while being followed by two Sinn Féin protesters holding banners calling for a No to the referendum, held in October this year. Upon reaching their destination they were greeted by more campaigners, who made it clear that, despite Fianna Fáil's insistance, there have been no changes to the Treaty. The protesters stood beside a small group of Yes to Lisbon supporters, ruining Fianna Fáil's photo opportunity, making the demonstration a complete success. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4 5 6Can anyone please tell me the name of the article within the Lison Treaty that specified that said treay could only come into effect when and if all member states ratified same. I remeber this being a point put to the people first time round. I was sure that if any country rejected the Lisbon Treaty that it could not gain legal effect. Was i dreaming of this article? How many people realise that this Treaty has been rejected in a number of other countries? Are we to believe that we can benefit from an organisation that refuses to listen to its people? Are we to believe that tasteless vegtables, big bankers and pharmacheuticals are the way to go. The Lisbon means bigger for business, but not for the benefit of the people. They want to take everything away and centralise it and accumulate it and keep it all. Take one look at the countries that fight for a bigger Europe. Mostly persecuting, tyrants. Can't invade other countries so use a politiclal guise!
...they rushed something through the EU just before the election incase of a no vote. Its all legal. They propose, the elected ''representatives'' vote, passed!
I dont have any links to back this up, but look around, or someone else could clarify.
Dear Mother Earth, we're turning into the wonderful lead you around by the nose "United States of America"!!!! Its getting very scary upon reading all of these articles and comments how us EU Citizens have become obsolete! Ireland wants to introduce carbon taxes, property taxes and water rates. They allow ads on TV for poor suffereing countries that have no water. Well take one look at Galway, and Ennis and any other Town in the Country that has to go out and buy their wonderfully priced bottled water, to come home from work, after sitting in traffic and watch tv ads beggin to send money for running water..... I ask you. We're a developed country and they want to charge for the fundamentals. They was mass production, not quality made, they want power not democracy. Im scared for me and for my future children.
You might know that the people of Ireland previously did have Direct Democratic powers in the original 1922 constitution. In this constitution, Articles 47 & 48 gave the sovereign people of Ireland the power to initiate referendum. In the same document, Article 50 gave the Oireachtas the power to amend the constitution if the newly amended constitution is put up for a referendum vote within 8 years. In 1928 the Irish Democracy was severely weakened when the presiding Oireachtas amended the constitution by removing Articles 47 & 48. This one act ended the people’s right to initiate referendum as a way to have a final say in the political decision making process. Political decision making was now solely in the domain of the Oireachtas without interference from the people. In response 96,000 outraged voters signed a petition in protest. Knowing that the Amended Constitution would be defeated, in 1929 the Oireachtas ignored the petition and used their Article 50 amendment powers to extend the 8 year deadline to 16 years. Finally in 1937, after most people had forgotten what had been done, the Irish people approved the amended constitution by referendum.
