Gaza Freedom Flotilla in final stages of trip

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Sunday May 30, 2010 12:50author by Kev - IPSC Report this post to the editors

The Gaza Freedom Flotilla is now in the final stages of its mission to Gaza, as it set sail from the waters outside Cyprus at 12.30pm today toward its final destination. Despite the loss of several Irish passengers - including politicians Aengus O Snodaigh TD, Chris Andrews TD and Sen. Mark Daly - due to Cypriot bureaucracy under severe pressure from Israel, the others are now en route to Gaza. They are expected to near Gaza sometime tomorrow (Monday 31st) afternoon.

Dr. Fintan Lane, Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) media officer and Freedom Flotilla participant said: "After a lot of wrangling and nonsense, we are finally on our way. We understand that Israel remains committed to stopping our supplies reaching Gaza, but we on the Freedom Flotilla remain just as resolute in our mission."

Meanwhile, the IPSC is organising a demonstration in solidarity with the Flotilla, tomorrow Monday 31st May at 6pm at the Spire on O'Connell Street, Dublin 1. We are calling on Irish people to show their support for this important mission by coming out on the streets.

Just heard a brilliant interview given by Denis on RTE 1 News. He answered all the questions put to him, scrubbed the lies, was diplomatic and credible in the process, as I said brilliant. Yes, he replied to a question, they knew they faced possible imprisonment.

Also on the news, before the interview, the reader said that Cyprus said they had forbidden the small boats from bringing the politicians and others on board
The TDs are on their way home to Ireland. Cyprus denied that they (Cypriots) had bowed to Israel.

Looks to me as if Israel had no stomach for imprisoning Irish parliamentarians and emphasis on Israel's trade links with Cyprus did the rest.

Good luck Flotilla and passengers!

Update:
At least two of the FreeGaza flotilla boats (the Turkish IHH boat and FreeGaza's Challenger 2) have been contacted and/or approached by IDF boats in international waters. If you haven't already contacted your press, elected representatives and other decision makers, in whatever country you are from, now is the time! Protest at Israeli state piracy, and demand that all governments follow their duty to protect humanitarian missions.
