Ramallah Protest Against Massacre of Human Rights Activists in Gaza Freedom Flotilla

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | news report author Monday May 31, 2010 22:54author by TD - Free Palestine Campaign Report this post to the editors

A Damascene volte-face to "international community" complicity

The West Bank city of Ramallah hosted an angry protest today against Israel's latest atrocity; the massacre of twenty international human rights activists on the Freedom Flotilla on a voyage of mercy to besieged Gaza.
ramallah1.jpg

Attendees, Corkman Dr. Michael Gerard and Shawan Jabarin; Director General of the independent Palestinian human rights organization, Al-Haq, stressed the point that the so called "international community" provides immunity and impunity to Israel in its never ending and escalating crimes through its silence and inaction and the butchery will deepen and continue until there is a Damascene volte-face to the present complicity.?

Last Friday's protest in the tiny West Bank village of Nabi Saleh was marked by the wanton use of tear gas and sound bombs against the demonstrators by Israeli Occupation Forces, the most egregious; the throwing of a sound bomb by a Border Policeman at a family who were observing the demonstration from, what they imagined the safety of the flat roof on their home but which resulted in head injuries to sixteen year old Ayam Barghouthi which necessitated her hospitalization. Two other protestors were injured, one from a tear gas projectile fired at his back and the other a broken finger, a fourteen year old was arrested along with his father but but were released after a few hours detention. The hilltop village of An Nabi Saleh has a population of approximately 500 residents and is located 30 kilometers northeast of Ramallah along highway 465. The demonstrations protest the illegal seizure of valuable agricultural land and the uprooting in January 2010 of hundreds of the village residents olive trees by the Halamish (Neve Zuf) settlement located opposite An Nabi Saleh. Conflict between the settlement and villagers reawakened in January 2010 due to the settlers attempt to re-annex An Nabi Saleh land despite an Israeli court decision in December 2009 that awarded the property rights of the land to the An Nabi Saleh residents. The confiscated land of An Nabi Saleh is located on the Halamish side of Highway 465 and is just one of many expansions of the illegal settlement since its establishment in 1977. Near the village is a natural spring named Ein Al Kus ("the Bow Spring"). In 2009 settlers from the nearby settlement of Halamish took control over the spring and it's surroundings while preventing Palestinian access to it. Subsequently, people of Nabi Salih and the nearby village of Dir Nizam began regular friday protests for the spring which they claim as their own, and against the Israeli occupation in general http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabi_Salih

Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu is explicit about the bloodbath in the Mediterranean: "Banditry and piracy. It is murder conducted by a state”. And what of Martin our Minister for Foreign Affairs: the straw fool that he is can only bleat expressions of "concern" - so much "concern" that Ireland still hasn't acted against Israel's forging of Irish passports for its Dubai death squad, voted for Israel to become member of the OECD and is willfully breaking the BDS call for sanctions against Israel with its recent purchase of Elbit Systems surveillance equipment and ongoing purchase of Israeli bullets. To boot, Ireland and our President publicly expressed support for Israel in a recent visit to New York. Yesterday, after his tea-for- two with Martin, Israeli Ambassador to Ireland, Zion Evrony was explicit: "The relationship between Israel and Ireland is strong, and will continue to be strong".

It's sickening: a government with no moral compass whoring itself to Big Power, leading us into a moral abyss.?

Meanwhile, in the West Bank village of Bil'in, the repression continues apace: Two days ago, Bil'in suffered an incursion by five Israeli Occupation Forces soldiers, hell bent on provoking and trying the patience of the villagers, letting them know as if they already weren't aware, who's the tyrant in the area, a number of teenage shepherds were harassed in the process and relatives rushed to protect them until a number of angry shabab put the IOF on notice, via some vigorous rock throwing, that the village will no longer be invaded with impunity and immunity, After an hour of to-ing and fro-ing with the stone throwers in vain efforts to arrest them, the IOF retreated to the safety of the nearby Apartheid-Annexation Wall. So it goes in Bil'in.
