In the wake of the Supreme Court's landmark trans ruling, is a Gender Recognition Certificate worth anything at all? Not really, says Mark Ellse ? but our muddled politicians won't be in a rush to admit they messed up.

Given the choice between two weak tea bags, Australia elected a weak tea bag, says Rebekah Barnett. Liberal leader Peter Dutton even lost his seat, a reflection of his hopeless deficit in personality and policies.

A look at the perjury trial taking place in Glasgow

Almost five weeks into this perjury trial at Glasgow High Court, and some of the events have been quite remarkable. Literally unbelievable. In order to stay on the right side of slander and defamation guidelines, I have to limit my comments to the following: If Tommy Sheridan is telling the truth, then he was the victim of an unprecedented stitch up, of a kind totally unique at any time in recorded history I would imagine, where just about everyone he was ever active politically with over the past 25 years has been engaged in a secret conspiracy against him, and where a whole number of people, who have testified to meeting him in the company of women not his wife, are also lying. On the other hand, If Sheridan is lying, then he is guilty of the most monstrous betrayal of socialist principles and of people who have been his comrades of for over 20 years. And if that is the case, how can any socialist worth his or her salt stand over what he is doing, and justify and defend it?

So who was Matthew McColl's girlfriend and why couldn't she be named in court? The judge must have accepted the question as admissible. So how come the witness got away with refusing to answer it? Why didn't the judge threaten to lock the witness up unless he answered the question?

The judge said he had to adjourn because he was required to do something. What was it? My guess would be that he saw the witness behind closed doors, asked for the woman's name, got it, and then said, "You're right. We couldn't possibly allow HER name to be mentioned in court".

Makes it sound as if she was a member of the royal family or something. Or maybe the Glasgow equivalent? That Tommy Sheridan is pals with Paul Ferris says it all.

Anyway, who was she?

And will Paul Ferris be a witness too?

Some of us have never forgotten that Sheridan threatened to "name names" of alleged poll tax rioters in 1990. Hundreds of people did get their names named and were jailed.
