MA in Community Education, Equality and Social Activism

category national | education | press release author Tuesday March 08, 2011 23:12author by Laurence Cox - NUI Maynooth Report this post to the editors

Practitioner course for movement activists, community educators and newcomers at Maynooth now taking applications for 2011 / 2012.

The MA in Community Education, Equality and Social Activism is now halfway through its first,
very successful year and applications are open for next year (autumn 2011 - summer 2012).

The course brings together social movement activists, community educators, grassroots organisers
and newcomers interested in social justice. Students and staff work together to bring out what
we already know about how ordinary people can challenge structures of oppression and injustice
and change the world for the better, to learn from each other and to develop our practice and theory.

Developed by the Departments of Sociology and Adult & Community Education at NUI Maynooth,
the course attracts a very diverse body of students from a wide range of movements and situations.
Classes (held over two days) explore three core areas: critical and praxis-oriented forms of
thinking; understanding equality and inequality; and power, politics and praxis. Following two
12-week semesters, students develop theses which are usually linked to their own projects and
practice.
